The Denver City High School Winter Guard Corp attended their first completion of the year on Saturday in Frenship and came home with top honors.
Competing against Lamesa, Pecos, and Lubbock Estacado the local group received a first place from the judges.
“My kiddos have been working since before Christmas getting ready for this season,” noted Katie Blanco, who coaches this group. “Unfortunately we were slotted to perform first and this is usually a death sentence since the judges haven’t seen anyone yet. I just told everyone to make sure the judges remember them and set the bar high. They did just that with their first place finish. I am so proud of these kids.”
Blanco noted this is the first of several competitions leading up to the championship round.
Members of this group include Taylor Ranney, Gabby Salazar, Maribel Burciaga, Robert Mendoza, Stefane Garcia, Jesus Anaya, Lisette Anaya, Maricarmen Gandara, Isabel Lira, Abelardo Palma, Joel Palma, Abby Morales, Natalie Soto, Erica Baker, Ailin Ortega, Mariana Polanco, Nidia Ceniceros, and Alondra Levario.
Finishing behind Denver City was Lamesa, Pecos, and Estacado.
