What do you say to someone who says they feel useless? Sadly, more and more of our kiddos today are feeling this way, as well as many older folks who have been pushed out of the workforce. A feeling of uselessness is no fun. So, how do we address this in folks who feel this way?

Jeremiah 1:5 clearly talks about how God has a plan for our lives. Jeremiah writes, “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. And before you were born I set you apart for a purpose.” God did not make any of us by mistake, nor did He make any of us to just sit around with nothing to do. He says we were set apart by Him. Peter says we were chosen by God. Luke, in Acts says we were handed over by God. In Proverbs, it states, “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” In the Psalms, David says that the plans of the Lord stand firm and

His purposes last through all generations. All these verses point to one over riding truth. We are made with a plan for our lives. We are made for a purpose. No one is useless. No one.

The question comes then, how do we know what it is that God wants us to do. It all seems very mysterious at times. But the truth is that we can more easily figure out God’s plan, when we are spending time with Him and studying His word. I used to tell the kiddos at school, if you don’t know where you are supposed to be, start by figuring out where you aren’t supposed to be. You aren’t supposed to do drugs. Take a step to the right. You aren’t supposed to lie or steal. Take a step to the right. You are supposed to love everyone and treat everyone with respect. Take a step to the right. Just keep weeding out those things you know for sure He does not want for your life, and finding more things you know He does want, and little by little, step by step, you will find yourself much closer to where He does want you to be. Soon, His pathway will become clearer.

So to the teenager feeling useless, get in touch with God. He values you more than anyone on earth ever will and He has a beautiful plan for you. Open your eyes really wide and look! To the older person who is beginning to feel you have outlived your usefulness, get in touch with God. He values you more than anyone on earth ever will and He still has a beautiful plan for your life. Open your eyes really wide and look!

Oh my goodness how great is our God and how wonderful is His plan for our lives! Spend time with Him and truly ask Him what He wants for your life and where you need to step out. It will one day become very clear to you, when you really seek Him.

God’s plan, whether you are young or old, will always make a difference!
