DC City Council meets

The Denver City City Council met in regular session on Monday, May 4 where they addressed their agenda.

Mayor Tommy Hicks led the Council in the pledges to the American and Texas flags and then offered the invocation. 

After the minutes from last meeting were approved, the Council went into new business. 

The highlight of the meeting was the swearing in of Councilmen Keith Mensch and Mark Sherman for a new three-year term. Both Councilmen were unopposed in their bids to serve on the Council for another term of office. They both read their documents and were duly sworn into office. Their term of office will be for three years.

Chief of Police David Hennigan approached the Council seeking permission to hire another full-time dispatcher for his department. He explained to the Council that because of some health-related issues with some of his dispatchers. He went on to request the hiring of a fulltime dispatcher through the end of this fiscal year, which is the end of September. Currently there are five full time dispatchers plus the Communication Supervisor. After some questions the Council unanimously approved his request.

Moving on in the agenda Mayor Hicks gave each council member an opportunity to discuss anything related to COVID-19. City Administrator Stan David had also forwarded an email to each Council member about what Lubbock is doing during this time. No Councilmen had anything to add and no action was required.

In the next item Mayor Hicks read a proclamation declaring the month of May being Lupus Awareness Month and May 15, 2020 as “Put on Purple Day.” Each Council member had also received an email from the head of the Lone Star Chapter about some things they are doing this year to try and raise money and awareness.

The Council then went into Executive Session to discuss plans for the new police department and the land west of the Fire Hall which is owned by Hook and Ladder. Fire Chief Cody Freeman was invited to join this Executive Session.

Following this Executive Session the Council unanimously approved paying bills that totaled $106,536.41.

With no further business the Council adjourned at 8:20.

Those in attendance included Ronald Weir, Robert Hanneman, Clinton Bowman, Mark Sherman, and Keith Mensch along with to Mayor Tommy Hicks. Council member Joan Breith remotely joined the meeting via Zoom.

The next meeting is scheduled for May 18 beginning at 7pm.
