BROWNFIELD, TX — Two men remain in custody following an early Saturday morning shooting in east Brownfield that left one person injured and a vehicle damaged by gunfire.
According to the Brownfield Police Department, officers heard gunshots at approximately 2:45 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, 2026, in the area of the 1600 block of East Tate.
An investigation determined that a shooting had occurred in the 1600 block of East Tate. Witnesses described the incident as a drive-by-style shooting.
During the incident, a 28-year-old Hispanic male was shot in the leg, while a vehicle belonging to a 25-year-old Hispanic male was struck by bullets. Witnesses also told investigators that one of the victims returned fire during the shooting.
The injured victim was transported to Brownfield Regional Medical Center with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
Officers were able to stop a vehicle leaving the area following the shooting. Further investigation resulted in the arrests of Justin DeLaCruz, 27, and Braxton Gil, 27.
Both men were arrested and booked on charges of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.
DeLaCruz and Gil are currently being held at the Terry County Law Enforcement Center, with bond set at $500,000 each.
The Brownfield Police Department said the shooting appears to have been an isolated incident and reassured residents that there is no ongoing danger to the public.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information may be released as it becomes available.
