When it comes to NFL QBs, we see them as the most important players on the team. We place unbelievable value on them. Paying the unreasonably high amount, and for what? For Lamar Jackson to get $52 million a year and lose to Patrick Mahomes in the playoffs. Jalen Hurts is to have one great year, get $51 million a year, lose his offensive coordinator to the Colts, then lead his team to lose against the Bucs. How about Jared Goff earning $53 million a year from the Lions, not because he’s the best QB in the league but because he was able to bring some relevance to the Lions with Dan Campbell leading the ship. Can anyone tell me why Kyler Murray and Deshaun Watson are earning $46 million?
The NFL teams will pay the QB based on the value they bring to their organization, and organizations are at different levels. Patrick Mahomes’s value to the Chiefs might be the same as what the Lions see in Jared Goff. Goff finally leads the Lions to the playoffs for the first time in years, while Mahomes brings another Lombardi back to KC. No one would dare think Goff is as good as Mahomes, so why pay him more than Mahomes outside of what the market is and what value the team places on him? Coaches can find success with almost any QB if they know what they’re doing offensively.

Kyle Shanahan, Sean McVay, Andy Reid, and more. So why destroy your salary cap to pay one guy when you can find someone just as good as who you have currently? Shanahan took Jimmy G to the Super Bowl, traded him to the Raiders, and he’s not even the starter in Las Vegas. Trey Lance, whom they drafted in the first round, is no longer with them. Zack Wilson, whom the Jets drafted, is now with the Broncos.
Just to add to my point, nobody thinks Dak Prescott should be making what he makes right now for him to lose in the first or second round of the playoffs. I could find another quarterback and pay him less to take me to the playoffs and do the same thing he’s done. I do think the QB position is important, but it’s not the end all be all. Especially when the draft’s final pick was a QB named Brock Purdy, who took his team to the Super Bowl thanks to the help of Kyle Shanahan.
