It was Hibernation Part two at the Yoakum County Library in Plains on Wednesday, February 3. The youngsters started off with a YouTube video read-along/sing-along called “Hibernation, Hibernation” to recall last week’s winter-napping animals. A hands-on sorting game welcomed participation in animal identification and classification of hibernating/non-hibernating critters. Following the activity, the group watched another YouTube song called “Can’t Wait to Hibernate.”

Once all seven children got settled in, the calendar was talked about, complete with counting the days until Valentine’s Day. Groundhog’s Day was also a topic of discussion, especially after Puxatony Phil indicated an early spring. “The Days of the Week” song was the next fun activity for the children. Then the lively group enjoyed singing “Bear Is Sleeping.” After a premature settle-down for book reading, the children then had to hop back up for the recitation of the United States and Texas pledges. Upon completion, Aries Jasso, Ella & Case Bearden, Johan Neudorf, Kynlee Bearden, Ethan Garcia, and Ian DeLaRosa gathered around for the reading of newly-released book “Lost. Found.” Then the children enjoyed the board book “Llama Llama I Love You.” Last of all was the book “The Kissing Hand.” (A reading of this classic book can be found online at storylineonline.net/kissing-hand).

The youngsters then made their own kissing hand Valentine’s Day paper bag to house their valentines at next week’s party! Caregivers painted the child’s hand and then plopped it onto a white sack. After that, the child glued a heart directly to the middle of their palm, reminding them (as in the story), that love is always within reach.

After cleaning up, the group was shown a short episode from Handy Manny called “Gopher Help.” Each child received a snack and coloring sheets and encouraged to return next week with valentines for library friends.

All children and their caregivers are welcome! The group meets at the Yoakum County Library in Plains 10 a.m. every Wednesday during the regular school year.
