Math and Science Teams Compete in Lubbock; Students do well in competing at the 4A level

The Denver City Math and Science team traveled to Lubbock on Saturday, November 12th, where seven DCHS students competed in the Texas Tech “Fall Fandango” UIL practice meet.

The seven students who attended included seniors Ray Carrasco, Gehrig Curtis, John Michael Davis, and Erin English, juniors were Aylin Carmona and CindySigala, and sophomore Daven Blanco.

These students competed in the 3A through 4A division in their own grade level. Listed below are the individual results:

Ray was 6th in Number Sense and Calculus and 9th in Math and Science; Gehrig was 2nd in Number Sense, 3rd in Calculus, and 6th in Math; John Michael was 4th in Number Sense, 5th in Calculus, 3rd in Math, and 2nd in Science; Erin was 6th in Number Sense, 2nd in Calculus, 7th in Math, and 10th in Science; Aylin was 7th in Number Sense, 3rd in Calculus, and 8th in Math; Cindy was 10th in Number Sense, 7th in Calculus, and 4th in Math; and Daven was 7th in Number Sense, 3rd in Calculus, 1st in Math, and 6th in Science.

Teams consisted of the top 3 scores from each school. The Number Sense team of Gehrig, Aylin, and John Michael took third place. The Calculator team of Aylin, Gehrig, and Erin placed second.

In Calculator, Aylin placed 4th overall, Erin placed 8th, overall, and Gehrig placed 9th overall.

“We were missing several students Saturday due to conflicts, but it was not a bad start to the year,” Coach Richie Cullins said.

Also competing on Saturday in the same practice meet were two students in News Writing, Features, and Spelling. Lilyan Whaley was 2nd in News and 1st in Features and Britney Dyck was 3rd in Spelling.
