The Fillie golf team led from the opening round to the finish in capturing the district championship while the Mustangs overcame a 9 stroke first round deficit that started them in third place to a second place finish behind district champion Idalou.
While leading from wire to wire the Fillies were able to maintain a 30 plus stroke throughout the three rounds. Kelly Ann Dougherty paced the Fillies with a 3 round total of 305, Hailey Henderson was 4 stokes back at 309, Syxx Yzaguirre shot a 314, Erin English had a three round total of 365, and Victoria Quezada finished with a 384.
As a team the Fillies shot a three round total of 1287.
Finishing in second place was Brownfield who shot a 1319, Post was third with a 1337, and Roosevelt came in fourth with a score of 1421.
After the first round the Mustangs were 9 strokes behind Slaton, but overcame those strokes in the second round held at Meadowbrook in Lubbock shooting a 367 while Slaton faltered with a 390 which left the Mustangs up by 14 strokes. The Denver City “B” team overcame Slaton in the third round and finished in 3rd place by 9 strokes and will be the first alternate to the Regional tournament.
Individually for the Mustangs “A” Tristin McGary led the way with a final total of 274. Finishing behind him was Hunter Sandlin with a 288, Ray Carrasco finished with a 292, John-Michael Davis shot a 298, and Alexis Gonzales had a 300. As a team the Mustangs shot an 1143.
For the “B” team Riley Boyd had the low total of 274, Aaron Armendarez finished with 288, Hernan Gonzales shot an even 300, Oscar Mendez finished with a 304, and Jakodee Roberson shot a 311. The final team total was 1164.
Idalou finished in first place with a1072 followed by the two Denver City teams. Finishing in third place was Slaton with 1173, Roosevelt was fourth with an 1198, and Brownfield finished last with a team score of 1205.
Riley Boyd will be advancing to the Regional meet as a medalist since he was not on a qualifying team.
Both Regional tournaments will be held in Abilene with the boys playing on Monday and
Tuesday, April 11-12 and the girls playing on Wednesday and Thursday, April 13-14.
