by Eric

The Brownfield Lady Cubs and Wellman-Union Lady Cats delivered strong district performances last week. Brownfield bounced back from a loss to Odessa Compass with a thrilling five-set win over Lamesa, while Wellman-Union earned back-to-back sweeps over Wilson and Southland. Both teams now look to carry that momentum into their next district matchups.

Lady Cubs Bounce Back With Five-Set District Win Over Lamesa

The Brownfield Lady Cubs showed plenty of resilience last week, responding to a tough road loss with an exciting five-set district victory at home.

Brownfield traveled to Odessa Compass last Tuesday for a District 3-3A matchup but fell to the district-leading Lady Cougars. Rather than dwelling on the loss, the Lady Cubs returned to practice determined to correct the areas that gave them trouble and prepare for their next opportunity.

That work paid off Saturday when Brownfield hosted Lamesa in a match that stayed competitive from beginning to end. The two teams traded blows through five sets, with neither side able to pull away for long. Brownfield stayed composed under pressure, continued trusting one another and fought for every point.

The deciding fifth set came down to the final moments, but the Lady Cubs found a way to finish. Brownfield edged Lamesa 15-13 in the final set to secure the district victory and improve to 1-1 in District 3-3A play and 6-11 overall.

The win was an important response after the loss at Odessa Compass and gave Brownfield some momentum heading into another district road test.

The Lady Cubs will travel to Stanton on Tuesday for their next District 3-3A matchup. Stanton also enters the contest at 1-1 in district play, setting up another important early-season district battle. Brownfield will look to carry the same focus, teamwork and determination that helped the Lady Cubs finish off Lamesa.

Lady Cats Roll Through District Week With Back-to-Back Sweeps

The Wellman-Union Lady Cats put together a strong week of district volleyball, picking up consecutive three-set sweeps over Wilson on Tuesday and Southland on Saturday.

Wellman-Union controlled both matches and continued building momentum as the district schedule moves forward. Across the two victories, the Lady Cats combined for an impressive 69 aces and 42 kills, creating pressure from the service line while also finishing points effectively at the net.

The performances marked another positive step for a team continuing to develop confidence and chemistry. The Lady Cats carried their work from practice into competition, playing consistently as they continued to build toward their goals for the season.

Wellman-Union will now turn its attention to a road matchup at Loop on Tuesday. The Lady Cats know the meeting with Loop is traditionally a hard-fought contest and will look to stay focused, communicate well, and continue playing as a unit.

The team will be off Saturday as Wellman-Union hosts its junior high tournament, giving the program an opportunity to showcase its younger athletes. The Lady Cats will then close out the first half of district play the following Tuesday against Klondike, looking to continue their improvement and finish the opening round of district competition on a strong note.
