The City Council met in regular session on Monday, April 18, where they addressed their bi-monthly agenda.

Before the meeting begin Councilman Ronald Weir congratulated the Fillie and Mustang track teams on their successful outing in the recently held district meets where both the varsity and junior varsity teams came home with the district championship trophies. He followed this with reminding everyone about the election forum that will be held on Monday night in the Mustang cafeteria starting at 7 pm.

The first item on the agenda centered around reviewing and considering the drought contingency plan. City Manager Stan David informed the Council this plan had been in place since August of 2000 and is usually reviewed at this time of the year just before heavy usage during the summer month.

“We just need to review it now and then to make sure no changes need to be made to the plan,” David said. “And we also just need to make people aware that we do have a plan in place.”

The nine-page plan basically outlines steps that will be followed should there be a severe drought in Denver City. Among the items listed are lawn water days along with private consumption within the homes.

Next on the agenda was discussing City funding for the youth summer recreating program. The City partners with DCISD in helping fund the different activities provided for the youth of Denver City. The city’s portion is $25,000.

“This is something we have done each year and I feel like we need to continue supporting this program,” David said. “We always include this in our budget each year.”

The program runs during the month of June and is coordinated by Fillie volleyball coach Megan David.

The Council unanimously approved this item.

Also on the agenda was the annual contribution to Project Graduation. This is a program that is held each year on the night of graduation and provides entertainment of the seniors in the hopes of keeping them off the streets on graduation night.

The Council unanimously approved a contribution of $1,500, an amount that is also included in the City budget each year.

And in the last item David went over the quarterly investment report from January 1 through March 31.

The report shows current balances in the different accounts as well as accrued interest income. As of March 31, 2016 the city had a total of $7,482,597 in combined Investment pools, Checking accounts, and Certificates of Deposit.

The Council also unanimously approved the payment of $140,794.27 in March Manual checks and $248,902.32 in regular monthly bills.

Council members Joan Breith, Ronald Weir, Robert Hanneman, Barbara Qualls, Dalphene Benson, and Keith Mensch along with Mayor Tommy Hicks were all present.

The next meeting will be held on May 2 at 7 pm.
