Commissioners Court Meets September 26, discusses dental and vision insurance

The Commissioners Court met in regular session on Monday, September 26, where they addressed their weekly agenda.

A good portion of the meeting was spent listening to Charlie Waits who presented insurance options for both dental and health insurance.

Waits had options from three different insurance companies for the court to consider, Met Life, Americus, and Guardian. He went through each proposal comparing each part with the other companies.

The County has been using Guardian for a number of years, but Waits said rates were lower and coverage was much better with Met Life.

“Basically what it all boils down to is if you want to continue being loyal to Guardian and continue using them even though their rates are a little higher and the coverage is not as good as Met Life,” Waits said. “Or do you want to save the county some money with better coverage and change companies?”

After more discussions Commissioner Ty Earl Powell made the motion to change to Met Life. The motion carried unanimously.

Each county employee’s share will be $125 per month for just the employee, employee/ spouse, and/or for employee/family. The county will pay the rest which will range from just over $1,000 for just the employee up to $1,838 for employee and family.

In other business the Court unanimously approved a motion to advertise for bids on asbestos abatement and demolition of the old Civic Center (formerly the Denver City Elementary Building) in Denver City. The bids will be advertised in the October 2 and 9 edition of the Denver City Press plus in the Odessa American and Lubbock Avalanche Journal. They will be opened on October 27 and awarded on October 31.

During the September 6 Commissioner Woody Lindsey had some preliminary dollar amounts that he presented to the court for the abatement project and demolition of the Civic Center building. Lindsey said the price he had received for the abatement would be just below $260,000. He also received two bids for the demolition, one for $177,450 and a second one for $180,000.

Both the county and the city of Denver City own the building 50/50. Each entity has set funds aside in their new budgets for the asbestos abatement and the demolition of the building.

The approval for a Coviden License Agreement with Yoakum County Hospital was tabled until possibly the next meeting.

There were no request for the disposal of county equipment, five line item transfers, and no Soil Conservation request.

Commissioner Lindsey informed the court that work has been stopped for approximately 2 weeks at the new Denver City Community Building until a flood plan can be put into place.

In auditing and settling all accounts against the County the Court unanimously approved to pay all bills and direct their payments.

Commissioners Woody Lindsey, Ray Marion, Ty Earl Powell, and Tim Addison along County Judge Jim Barron were all in attendance.

The next meeting will be held on Monday, October 3, 2016 at 10 am in the County Courthouse.
