Texas Sales Tax Revenue Climbs in June; Terry County Posts Strong Growth While Brownfield Holds Steady

BROWNFIELD, TX — Acting Texas Comptroller Kelly Hancock announced last Thursday, July 1, 2026 that state sales tax revenue reached $4.2 billion in June, an increase of 4.2% compared to June 2025. Most of the June collections reflect taxable sales made during the month of May.

Business-related sectors delivered mixed results across the state. Collections from the construction and wholesale trade industries outpaced last year’s totals, while the mining and manufacturing sectors came in below June 2025 levels.

Consumer spending remained a bright spot in the Texas economy. Sales tax receipts from the retail trade sector increased by more than 3% over the same month last year, while the services sector posted an increase of nearly 9%.

Among retailers, electronic shopping outlets continued their strong performance with double-digit growth for the fourth consecutive month. Meanwhile, collections from general merchandise stores declined by approximately 2% compared to June 2025.

Texas restaurants also continued to perform well, with sales tax collections increasing 4.8% year over year, outpacing inflation for food consumed away from home.

Overall, sales tax collections for the three months ending in June 2026 rose 6.9% compared to the same period last year. Sales tax remains the state’s largest source of tax revenue, accounting for 58% of all state tax collections.

Terry County Sees Strong Growth

Locally, Terry County posted one of its strongest monthly reports of the year.

The county received $100,129.14 in sales tax allocations this month, a 46.14% increase over the $68,511.74 received during the same period last year. Year-to-date, Terry County has collected $512,620.12, up 18.60% from $432,213.04 at this point in 2025.

Brownfield Up for the Month, Nearly Even for the Year

The City of Brownfield received $192,263.29 in July sales tax allocations, an increase of 17.50% over the $163,614.67 received during the same period last year.

Despite the strong monthly gain, Brownfield’s year-to-date sales tax collections remain nearly unchanged. Through July, the city has received $1,086,244.23, compared to $1,098,002.74 during the same period in 2025, a slight decrease of 1.07%.

Meadow and Wellman

The City of Meadow received $1,305.23 this month, down 1.55% from last year’s payment of $1,325.84. However, Meadow’s year-to-date collections totaled $11,199.01, an increase of 10.90% over last year’s $10,097.48.

The City of Wellman received $712.07, down 6.76% from the $763.75 received during the same period in 2025. Year-to-date, Wellman has collected $7,242.25, compared to $11,781.49 last year, a decrease of 38.52%.

While statewide consumer spending continues to show resilience, Terry County’s latest sales tax figures indicate continued economic activity across much of the county, with Brownfield showing strong monthly momentum even as year-to-date collections remain essentially flat.

Texas collected the following revenue from other major taxes:

  • motor vehicle sales and rental taxes — $641 million, up 2% from June 2025;
