DCISD 2020-2021 Cheerleading Squads Announced

Cheerleading sponsor Janet Gibson recently announced the 2020-2021 cheerleading squads following recent tryouts.

The Junior High had their tryouts done before Spring Break so they did it the traditional way with judges, student body and teacher votes.

The high school tryouts were scheduled for March 27th but because of school being canceled this date was canceled.

Because the cheerleaders have to be fitted for essential items, register for camp and do fundraising, it became a time issue.

Many schools across the country opted for Zoom tryouts. Keeping this in mind those trying out for the varsity and junior varsity teams were given a cheer, chant, a dance to learn, and perform three jumps and/or tumbling during their Zoom segment. These cheers were perform in front of three Texas Tech cheerleaders. The material was taught before Spring Break and so they actually had two extra weeks to practice on their own.

The candidates were aware, due to extenuating circumstances, that 100% of their score would come from the judges.

There were 11 candidates for Varsity, one for mascot, and 19 for Junior Varsity. After the tryouts eight were selected for Varsity and 8 for Junior Varsity.

“We are so proud of all who tried out and hope they will all continue to support our Mustangs and Fillies,” Mrs. Gibson stated.

Varsity cheerleaders will be Josey Gomez, Nikaya Ontiveros, Odalys Gonzales, Daniela Villa, Sadie Jones, Zaide Villegas, Valerie Yanez, and Mayrin Orona.

Junior Varsity cheerleaders will include Lexi Blanco, Jolette Rodriquez, Janeli Carmona, Clarissa Orona, Madi Cruz, Rihanna Garcia, Madeline Gonzales, and Dezaray Huertas.
