The West Texas Young Farmers Association met for their regular meeting on Monday, June 8. President Kirk Martin presided over the meeting. This group was organized several a few years back to work to make the agriculture voice heard in government and also, to educate those in this area about farming and what the agricultural life is about.
Special guests included Victoria Whitehead from the High Plains Water District. Victoria gave an overview of what kind of shape the underground water in this area is in and also went over some of the recent rulings and how they might impact this area. She also talked about how various crops impact our water level in the Ogallala Aquifer.
Tanner Swaringen from Lone Star State Bank was also present and he reminded those in attendance that there have been some changes in some of the CARES ACT deadlines and requirements for spending.
The group discussed their very popular Boots on the Bricks event and it was decided to cancel it for this year with there being so much unknown these days with the changes in guidelines due to COVID-19.
There was also discussion on the Peanut Video – from planting to harvest. These videos are great tools to educate those not involved in agriculture on what all growing a crop entails.
Following regular routine business, the meeting was adjourned.
