Two “B’s” and an “A” for Terry County Schools

All three Terry County school districts had a great Texas Education Agency (TEA) Accountability Rating for the 2021-2022 school. TEA released the state ratings for all school districts in the state on Monday, August 15, 2022. This is just time for when most Texas students will be returning for the 2022-2023 school year.

Brownfield ISD was granted an overall accountability rating of a “B” with a few “Distinction Designations.” Beginning with the Brownfield High School campus, it had an overall “B”. Under student achievement, they received an 84 (B). Under school progress, BHS received a 91 (A), and closing the gaps, they received a 74(C). BHS did get distinction designations for Mathematics, Social Studies, and Postsecondary Readiness.

For Brownfield Middle School, the campus received an overall score of 72(C). Under student achievement, BMS did not receive a rating due to Senate Bill 1365 which was passed in the 2021 Texas Legislature. This bill allowed for districts to get a pass on ratings, due to COVID. Although there was no official rating for student achievement, TEA did give a hypothetical rating which was not released. Moving on, BMS received a 72(C) in school progress and a 72(C) in closing the gaps.

Colonial Heights Elementary falls under Oak Grove Elementary and it was rated as a “C”. Its overall rating was 72, and student achievement was not rated due to Senate Bill 1365. School progress did receive a 74 (C), but closing the gaps was not rated again due to Senate Bill 1365. BISD has improved much over the years when the BMS and Oak Grove would receive ratings that were equivalent to an “F”. The last rating BISD received as a district was a “C”. The 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years were not rated due to the coronavirus pandemic.

BISD Superintendent Chris Smith said, “BISD is proud of the work accomplished by our students and staff. We have come a long way in terms of improved instruction and growth. We will continue to work for our kids and community to make sure we keep the momentum going forward!”

Although Meadow ISD received another “B”, its score actually went up. The new rating score MISD received was an 87, three years ago it received an 83. In student achievement they received an 88, in school progress MISD received a 91, and closing the gaps, they received a 78. MISD Superintendent Bric Turner said, “We are thrilled that our score improved from an 83 the last time we were rated to an 87. We are closer than ever to that “A” rating and will continue all that we can to reach that goal.”

Wellman-Union ISD did really well with its rating by getting an “A”. WUISD scored an overall 90 for the district. Like MISD, WUISD is only scored for the whole district, there are no individual campus ratings. WUISD received a 90 in student achievement, 92 in school progress, and an 85 in closing the gaps. “We are all celebrating the “A” rating! This is a Congratulations to the staff, students, and parents. We are a team and it takes all of us working together for the best interest of the kids and the district. We are looking forward to the new school year with our students and continuing to build the knowledge and skills with each one of them. It’s a great day to be a Wildcat!” said school Principal Bridget Brown.
