The tournament season has concluded, and all six Terry County basketball teams will return to the court this Friday, January 3rd. Both Brownfield teams will continue in district play, while the girls’ teams from Meadow and Wellman-Union will kick off their district season against each other. The Broncos and Wildcats will have non-district games. This week, there are no new rankings, but the standings have been updated. Click HERE to see current rankings from last week.
Brownfield Lady Cubs (1-2, 5-16)
After a much-needed break, the Lady Cubs traveled to Lubbock County to participate in the Caprock Classic, part of the world’s largest high school basketball tournament. Although Brownfield finished with a record of 1-3 in the tournament, they demonstrated significant improvement. They were placed in the MCM Elegante Hotel and Suites bracket and faced Slaton in their first round, where they unfortunately lost to the Lady Tigers. It’s worth noting that Slaton has a record of 10-6, with those six losses coming against three top-25 teams, one district opponent, and both 4A and 5A schools. In their next game, they lost to Saint Jo, another top-25 1A school. However, they managed to secure a win against Wildorado on Friday night before concluding the tournament with a defeat to regional powerhouse Ropes on Saturday.

This week, the Lady Cubs do not have a game on Tuesday night, but they will return to district action on Friday, January 3rd, when they face Lamesa at home. This matchup promises to be exciting for both teams. The Lamesa Lady Tors are currently 0-3 in district play and 7-17 overall. The Lady Cubs, on the other hand, average 40 points per game while allowing an average of 59 points. Lamesa averages 32 points per game and allows 44 points.
#14 Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs (2-0, 11-7)
The Runnin’ Cubs had most of last week off for the Christmas break before heading north to Canyon to participate in the Tatum Tough Tournament at Canyon High School. The team performed exceptionally well, finishing the weekend with a 3-0 record. They started by defeating Bushland in a challenging game, winning 59-46. Next, they faced #10 1A Nazareth and secured a solid victory, 72-43. In their final game, they went up against the tournament host, the Canyon Eagles, who are one of the largest 4A schools in the state. This match went into overtime, but the Runnin’ Cubs triumphed over the Eagles with a score of 62-56, ending the year 2024 on a high note.
The Runnin’ Cubs, like the Lady Cubs, return to district play on Friday, January 3rd, where they will host Lamesa. The Golden Tors have struggled this season, currently sitting at a record of 2-14 and having lost three consecutive games in the same tournament as the Runnin’ Cubs. However, both teams share a common statistic: they are both 2-0 in district play. Lamesa is averaging 45 points per game while allowing 60 points. In contrast, Brownfield averages 64 points per game and allows 57. It’s worth noting that Brownfield and Lamesa do not have the best relationship on the court.
Meadow Lady Broncos (0-0, 11-7) & Wellman-Union Lady Cats (0-0, 10-9)
The Lady Broncos had the opportunity to take the court one last time before beginning district action. They participated in the Smyer Tournament, finishing with a record of 1-2 — losing to Smyer and Plains, but managing to secure a victory against Post. The Lady Broncos will open district play this Friday, January 3rd, against their cross-county rivals, Wellman-Union. The Lady Cats recently faced Seagraves and won the game 44-37 and will host Meadow in their district opener. Currently, the Lady Broncos are averaging 42 points per game while allowing 41. In comparison, Wellman-Union is scoring approximately 37 points per game and allowing 36. Although these two teams are quite similar in performance, rivalry games are intense for a reason..

Meadow Broncos (0-0, 8-12)
The Broncos didn’t have a game over the Christmas break, but they will face the West Texas Tornados at home on Friday. Although the Tornados are a homeschool team, they should not be underestimated, as they recently challenged #11 in 2A, Plains, and #13 in 1A, Whitharral.
Wellman-Union Wildcats (0-0, 7-11)
Like Meadow, the Wildcats didn’t have a game during the Christmas break. They were scheduled to face Rotan this past Monday, but the Yellowhammers canceled. This Friday, the Wildcats will finally have the opportunity to play against the Throckmorton Greyhounds. Throckmorton has not won a game this season and currently has a record of 0-8.
