Terry County High School Basketball Roundup: Week 8

by Eric

Both the Brownfield girls’ and boys’ squads competed in district action last week, with the Meadow and Wellman-Union teams combining for a 1-5 record.

Brownfield Lady Cubs (1-2, 4-13)

The Brownfield Lady Cubs continued their district action last Tuesday but were defeated by the Denver City Fillies, with a score of 63-39, leaving them with an 0-2 record in the district. However, they bounced back on Friday evening when they traveled to Odessa to face Compass Academy, winning 43-23 and improving their record to 1-2 (4-13 overall) in district play.

The Lady set out to enjoy the Christmas break and will hit the hardwood this Friday, Dec. 27th in the worlds largest high school basketball tournament, the Caprock Classic Tourney. Brownfield has been placed in the MCM Elegante Girls Bracket. They will face off with a tough Slaton squad. The Lady Tigers are 10-5 on the season, and 3-1 in their district, plus they have won over a few very good squads.

#14 Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs (2-0, 11-7)

Last week was a great one for the Runnin’ Cubs as they opened their district competition with a significant win over Denver City, finishing the game 86-47. They then traveled south to Odessa to face Compass Academy. Once again, the Runnin’ Cubs emerged victorious, winning the game 79-45. They returned home with a perfect 2-0 record in the district.

Like the Lady Cubs, the Runnin’ Cubs will be taking some time off for the Christmas break. On Friday, Dec. 27, they will travel north to Canyon to compete in the Tatum Tough Tournament. Brownfield will face Bushland on Friday, Dec. 27, at 10:30 AM. Although the Falcons have a record of 3-7 this season, they have faced some tough opponents. Later that day, at 4:30 PM, Brownfield will compete against #10 1A Nazareth. While Naz is a 1A school, they are not to be underestimated; they will give everything they have against the Runnin’ Cubs. On Saturday, Brownfield will play Canyon High School. The Eagles are a formidable 4A team, and the Runnin’ Cubs will certainly have their hands full.

Meadow Lady Broncos (0-0, 10-5)

The Lady Broncos went 1-1 last week. They took on Crosbyton on Tuesday and came away with a decent win, 50-40, improving their overall record. Next, they played a tough O’Donnell squad, losing 53-35. This weekend, they will head over to Smyer for tournament action.

Meadow Broncos (0-0, 8-12)

Last week, the Broncos ended up losing both games: Crosbyton 53-29 on Tuesday, and on Friday they lost to O’Donnell 52-23. The Broncos will not hit the hardwood again until January 3rd, 2025.

Wellman-Union Lady Cats (0-0, 9-9)

Unfortunately for the Lady Cats, the Christ the King game scheduled for last Tuesday did not take place, so they only had one game. Last Thursday, they took on rival Loop, losing 45-35. The Lady Cats will not return to basketball action until Tuesday, Dec. 30th, against Seagraves.

Wellman-Union Wildcats (0-0, 7-11)

Like the Lady Cats, the Wildcats didn’t get a game in with Christ the King last Tuesday, so they also only played one game. They lost to rival 17-1 Loop 91-48. The Longhorns are probably one of the most underrated teams in class 1A. Their only loss so far this season was their first game against #11 2A Plains. Again, like the girls, the Wildcats won’t hit the hardwood until Dec. 30th.
