Brownfield Cubs (0-6) vs San Angelo Lake View Chiefs (4-2) at Brownfield, 7:00 pm Kickoff
The Cubs faced a tough loss last Friday night when they hosted Merkel during homecoming, losing 47-14. Brownfield had a decent first half, but things took a turn when they punted the ball while trailing 23-14. The Badgers were pinned deep, right on their own one-yard line. After a holding penalty against Merkel moved the ball back to the half-yard line, the Cubs’ defense did its job and tackled the Badgers’ quarterback in the end zone, resulting in a safety.

However, the celebration was short-lived. An official called a personal foul for facemask on one of the Cubs during the tackle. Following that penalty, the game quickly unraveled for Brownfield. Coach Johnson stated, “We played a team with confidence, and it is always tough to beat a team coming in with a winning record. We just couldn’t establish any momentum in the second half or get any stops on defense.” The Cubs’ defense allowed 293 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while Merkel had been averaging 134 yards per game prior to facing Brownfield.
Now, the Cubs will be looking ahead to their week 7 matchup against San Angelo Lake View, another solid opponent that will challenge them physically. Brownfield will need to match that level of play and win the turnover battle. Lake View is a 4A Division I school, with approximately 550 more students than Brownfield. Most of the Chiefs’ offense comes through the air, so Brownfield’s secondary must be prepared. However, if Lake View struggles to get anything going in the passing game, they may resort to a strong ground attack.
Both teams have faced Levelland, and both suffered losses to the Lobos; Brownfield lost 50-0, while Lake View lost 40-33. In Brownfield’s game against Levelland, the Lobos recorded 304 rushing yards and scored 5 rushing touchdowns. Therefore, it is essential for the Cubs’ rushing defense to make significant stops this week.

Meadow Broncos (6-0) vs O’Donnell Eagles (2-4) at O’Donnell, 1st District Game, 7:30 pm kickoff

No matter what happens from here on out, Meadow will finish the season with a winning record. In last week’s game against Lorenzo, Meadow demonstrated their offensive prowess with an impressive 86-55 victory. The Broncos scored on all 11 possessions and showcased strong offensive play! When necessary, the defense stepped up, recording two interceptions and making critical stops. Brayson Parker excelled with nine touchdowns on 13 carries, EJ Piedra contributed with a pick-six, and Esteban Estrada had a 50-yard touchdown reception.
Now, the Broncos face a significant challenge as they travel to O’Donnell to begin district play. Coach Jackson stated, “This week will be a great test for us as we have been dealing with a few injuries. We need to slow down their rushing attack and find ways to move the ball using the adjustments we’ve worked on throughout the week.” This game will provide an opportunity for several Bronco players to step up.
The only common opponent both teams have faced is Spur. Meadow won against Spur in week four with a score of 44-18, while O’Donnell recently defeated them 58-14 this past Friday night. One major difference between the two teams is that the Eagles have more depth than the Broncos, and O’Donnell is nearly twice the size of Meadow.
Wellman-Union Wildcats (1-5) vs #7 Borden County Coyotes (5-1) at Gail, 1st District Game, 7:30 pm kickoff.

It doesn’t get any easier for the Wildcats this week as they travel to Gail, Texas, to take on the #7 (or #6 in six-man) Borden County Coyotes in both teams’ district opener. The Wildcats suffered another tough loss last week to Grady in the battle of the Wildcats, losing 58-26. Unfortunately, Wellman-Union is currently on a five-game losing streak, bringing their record down to 1-5. However, these losses can’t be attributed to the team’s offensive performance, as they have averaged 33.0 points per game during this stretch. Clearly, they know how to score.
The Coyotes are a powerhouse program in the region, and Coach LaBadie and his team are well aware of this. Borden County has faced a challenging schedule, taking on three different top-10 teams in the past six weeks, with their only loss coming against #4 Benjamin, also by a score of 58-26. The Coyotes bring an impressive average of 51 points per game, compared to the Wildcats’ 33 points per game. It’s worth noting that a few of the five losses could have swung in the Wildcats’ favor if a couple of plays had gone differently.
To succeed, the Wildcats will need to play their game and limit Borden County’s offensive possessions. They should focus on running the clock down and making short but meaningful plays to advance the ball down the field. The Coyotes also have more depth, so the Wildcats must stay focused, regardless of fatigue.
