Preview: Texas Tech Looks to build of momentum against Oklahoma

With only two weeks and four games remaining in the regular season, Texas Tech will look to build on the momentum this week when it plays Oklahoma at 8 p.m. on Tuesday in the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman, Oklahoma before hosting No. 22 TCU on Saturday in Lubbock.  

Tech (15-12, 4-10 Big 12) extended its three-game winning streak with a 78-72 win at West Virginia on Saturday after a victory over No. 6 Texas last Monday, while the Sooners (13-14, 3-11 Big 12) took an 85-83 overtime loss to the Longhorns on Saturday following a win over No. 12 Kansas State earlier in the week. Oklahoma won the first matchup this season against Tech with a 68-63 overtime win on January 7 in Lubbock. The Red Raiders are currently 3-1 in games where a Big 12 team is going for a season sweep with only Baylor getting it.

The Big 12 has widely been considered the top conference nationally with the current NET Rankings reflecting that. The rundown reads: No. 6 Kansas (22-5), No. 9 Texas (21-6), No. 12 Baylor (20-7), No. 15 Iowa State (17-9), No. 20 Kansas State (20-7), No. 32 West Virginia (15-12), No. 37 Oklahoma State (16-11), No. 54 Texas Tech (15-12) and No. 63 Oklahoma (13-14). The Red Raiders, who advanced to the Sweet 16 last season, are looking to make their fifth straight NCAA Tournament which would extend a program best. The Big 12 Championship is set for March 8-11 at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Missouri.

Jaylon Tyson is coming off a career-high 27 points in the road win at West Virginia, while Fardaws Aimaq recorded his 42nd double-double of his career with a season-high 14 points and 12 rebounds in the game. De’Vion Harmon scored in double figures for the ninth straight game, going for 13 points against the Mountaineers after scoring a career-high 25 points last Monday in the home win over No. 6 Texas. Harmon leads Tech with 15.1 points per Big 12 game while Kevin Obanor leads the team for the season with 14.8 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. Obanor comes into the game against OU with 2,076 points, 1,062 rebounds, and 37 double-doubles through 150 games in his career. Harmon is returning to Norman after beginning his career with the Sooners during the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons. He scored 551 points during his two seasons with OU and came into the 119th game of his career with 1,299 career points. Harmon leads Tech with 19.4 points over the past five games, including three of those being 20 or more. Tech freshman Pop Isaacs had missed six straight games with an injury but returned against WVU in a game where he scored 15 points with three 3-pointers. He leads Tech with 50 3-pointers this season and is averaging 11.8 points per game. A sophomore guard, Tyson is now averaging 10.8 points for the season but is at 16.4 points and 6.0 rebounds over the past five games.

Tech is currently 2-6 on the road. OU is 8-6 at home.

Grant Sherfield leads Oklahoma this season with 16.8 points per game to go along with 92 assists, while Jalen Hill is scoring 10.3 points and has 5.7 rebounds per game. Tanner Groves is adding 9.8 points and a team-high 6.8 rebounds. Sherfield led OU at Texas on Saturday with 18 points, including making four 3-pointers.
