The Mustang baseball team opened their 2016 season on a good note by winning 3 of their 4 games in the Pecos tournament held last weekend.
After falling to Pecos in the opening game 8-0 the Mustangs came back to defeat Presidio 5-1, Ft. Stockton 7-1, and Alpine 4-3.
Eagle pitching baffled the Mustangs in the opening game limiting the Ponies to a single hit by pitcher Broedy Burris. Burris went the first 4 innings giving up 4 runs on 5 hits, struck out 5 and issued 3 base on balls. Cameron Garcia came on in relief pitching the final 2 innings. He also gave up 4 runs on 4 hits, had 4 strike outs, but issued 5 base on balls.
In their first game on Friday the Mustangs came back with an impressive 5-1 win over Presidio. After Presidio took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning the Mustangs came back with single runs in each of the first two innings and then added 3 more in the bottom of the 4th.
Mustang batters pounded Presidio pitching for 7 hits with Cameron Garcia, Burris, Luis Rodriquez, James Chatham, Justin Riley, Braden McGary, and Holden Sutton all had one hit each. Rodriquez went the distance for the Mustangs giving up one run on one hit, struck out 10 and had only 2 base on balls.
In their next outing the Mustangs rallied for 7 runs over the last two innings for their 7-1 win over Ft. Stockton. James Chatham led the way for the Mustangs with 2 hits. McGary went the distance allowing one run on 5 hits, struck out 5 and walked just 1.
And in their final outing the Mustangs overcame a 3-0 deficit by scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning to pull out the exciting win. Villerreal paced the Mustangs at the plate with 2 hits. Burris went the first 4 innings giving up 3 runs on five hits, struck out 6 and walked 2. Rodriquez got the in going the final inning in relief.
After entertaining Lubbock Trinity on Tuesday the Mustangs were in the Monahans Tournament over the weekend and on Tuesday they will travel to Littlefield.
