I love Summer! Actually, I love all the seasons. Weather doesn’t wear on me too much, like it does some people. I will say this, the heat bothers me more as I get older than it once did. But there is so much to love about each season. What I don’t love about summer is the mosquitoes and the biting flies! I am a mosquito magnet. They love me. Of course, what’s not to love, right?? I kid. But, for whatever reason, my chemical make up draws mosquitoes and biting flies like I was drenched in syrup! Quite annoying.
I asked our friend, Google, why God made mosquitoes, and was given this answer, “When God created the world, He declared it to be good (Genesis 1:31). In this perfect creation, there was no sin, disease, crime, or suffering. Mosquitoes were also part of this original creation, but they were vegetarian creatures that did not bite humans or animals for blood.” I am not really sure how scientists know they were vegetarian way back then, but okay. So did sin change them to be venomous biters of humans? Maybe that was a part of that sin package we got when Adam and Eve took a bite of the forbidden fruit. Or maybe it was when the plagues were upon Egypt as God prepared to get His people out of bondage. It says in Exodus, “Then the Lord said to Moses, Say to Aaron, Stretch out your rod and strike the dust of the ground, that it may become biting gnats (or mosquitoes) throughout all the land of Egypt.”
Perhaps they did not start biting until that day. I suppose we have no real way of knowing. But we do know that God created everything with a reason and a purpose. Despite their reputation as pests and disease spreaders, mosquitoes play important roles in ecosystems. They are an essential food source for many species, including fish, birds, and bats, and they also help control the populations of other insects. So there you go!
Now I know you are wondering where the words of wisdom are in all this. I kind of am myself at this point! But, seriously, God set the world in motion. He created us for a purpose, just like He created all living things for a purpose. Our mission is to find our purpose in this life. We were saved to serve our God! When you give your heart to Him, you not only get a loving Father and the gift of Eternal Life, you also get the opportunity to serve Him through your life. How are you serving God today?
The next time you are furiously scratching away at your latest mosquito bite, let that be a reminder for you to consider what you are doing in this world for God and for His Kingdom! It will make a difference!
