Denver City Council holds public meeting on proposed annexation

  The Denver City City Council met in regular session on Monday night, Feb. 1 where they addressed their agenda.

During the announcement portion of the meeting Mayor Tommy Hicks read a letter of thanks from Rex Murphy, Plains Maintenance Section Supervisor, expressing his gratitude to the City of Denver City and all of Yoakum County for their help in the recent snow storm. Crews were instrumental in helping with traffic control which allowed TXDOT equipment to keep the highways open.

City Manager Stan David reminded Council members of the upcoming Chamber of Commerce banquet which will be held on Monday, February 22. Bob Phillips will be the principle speaker.

The Council then conducted their second public hearing concerning the annexation of land north and south of the new Stripes on Highway 214. The Council will make an official decision on the annexation during their March meeting.

Regan McMillan of Perdue, Brandon, Fielder, Collins, and Mott L.L.P. met with Council to discuss entering into a contract with the City to help collect delinquent fines and fees for the Municipal Court. McMillan said they would pass along a 30% add on fee to all defendants for the collections of the fees and fines. The Council unanimously approved a resolution and the contract.

The Council also unanimously approved the purchase of a3/4 ton 2016 crew cab Chevrolet from Mustang Country Chevrolet. The purchase price was $31,604.

After paying bills the Council adjourned at 7:25 p.m.

Council members Joan Breith, Ronald Weir, Barbara Qualls, Dalphene Benson, and Keith Mensch along with Mayor Tommy Hicks were all present. Councilman Robert Hanneman was out of town due to a death in his family.

The next scheduled meeting will be 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 15.
