The City Council met in regular session on Monday, June 6, where new Council member Clinton Bowman was sworn into office.

Bowman was out of town when newly elected Councilmen Mark Sherman and Keith Mensch took the oath of office on May 16. All three were elected during the May 7 elections.

Following the swearing in ceremonies Mayor Tommy Hicks took a moment to brag on the recent 2016 high school graduates and all they contributed to the school system during their four years in high school. He also congratulated the rest of the student body, coaches, and teachers on their many achievements throughout the year.

Criminal District Attorney Bill Helwig was to meet with the Council to update them on his search for a new special investigator, but was unable to attend. Current special investigator Ray Scifres will resign this position on December 31 and assume his new job in Hockley County after he was elected as the new Sheriff. The City pays a portion of the counties special investigator salary for the work he does in Denver City.

The Council also approved continuing using the auditing firm of Myatt, Blume, and Osburn to perform the auditing of the City’s finances. Councilman Mark Sherman abstained from the voting.

The Council also approved the continued sponsorship Town Talk Sports and Newscast Productions for the next year. City Manager Stan David noted the internet based radio station had expanded their services from the previous year to include not only Denver City sports, but also a Denver City and Yoakum County news service. Councilman Clinton Bowman abstained from the vote since he’s an employee of Town Talk radio.

Since the first Council meeting will fall on the 4th of July David suggested moving that meeting to another date. After some discussion the Council unanimously approved moving the first meeting in July to July 5, a Tuesday.

The Council then went into an executive session and then came out of the session to approve the payment of the monthly bills that totaled $159,586.36.

There was a special budget session held after the regular meeting. The next meeting is set for June 20 at 7 pm in the Council chambers.
