Brownfield and Wellman-Union Volleyball Teams Look to Finish Strong in Second Half of District Play

by Eric

As the second half of district volleyball competition begins, the Brownfield Lady Cubs and Wellman-Union Lady Cats look to finish their seasons strong. Both teams faced challenging opponents last week, but each continues to show determination, improvement, and a commitment to competing at a high level. Brownfield head coach Angelica Garibaldi is focused on consistency and building on her team’s progress, while Wellman-Union head coach Mandy Carter hopes to carry the momentum of a three-set victory over Wilson into another important week of district action. With crucial matchups ahead, both Terry County volleyball programs are working to turn valuable lessons and hard-fought performances into on-court success.

Brownfield Lady Cubs Look to Build on Progress as They Prepare for Lamesa Rematch

The Brownfield Lady Cubs volleyball team continues to battle through district competition, and while the results have not always gone their way, head coach Angelica Garibaldi believes her team is making significant strides as the second round of district play gets underway.

Last Tuesday, the Lady Cubs hosted Coahoma but struggled to find their rhythm, falling in three straight sets. Brownfield returned to action Saturday against Odessa Compass, but the Lady Cubs once again fell short. However, despite the loss, Garibaldi saw plenty of positives in her team’s performance.

“On Saturday, we took on Odessa Compass and came up short. However, I was proud of the way our girls competed against Compass,” Garibaldi said. “We have improved tremendously since the first time we faced them, and the growth we showed on Saturday was a great way to begin the second round of district play.”

For Garibaldi and the Lady Cubs, the focus isn’t simply on wins and losses, but on developing a team that keeps improving with each opportunity on the court.

As district competition enters its second half, Brownfield is working to eliminate mistakes, improve execution, and maintain a competitive mindset from the opening serve to the final point.

“We are continuing to work on consistency, execution, and competing at a high level throughout every set,” Garibaldi explained.

While the Lady Cubs have faced their share of adversity this season, Saturday’s performance against Odessa Compass showed the team can adjust and compete at a higher level than earlier in the year.

Lady Cubs Prepare for Another Battle With Lamesa

The Lady Cubs hit the road Wednesday, October 14, for another district showdown against the Lamesa Lady Tornadoes, a familiar opponent that has already given Brownfield two closely contested matches this season.

Garibaldi said both previous meetings featured nail-biting sets, and she expects another competitive battle when the Lady Cubs return to Lamesa.

“Tomorrow, we travel back to Lamesa for what we know will be another battle,” Garibaldi said. “We have played them twice this season, and both matches have come down to nail-biting sets.”

The Lady Cubs hope to use their familiarity with Lamesa to their advantage, while building on the energy and determination they displayed against Odessa Compass.

“We know what to expect, and our goal is to carry the same energy, intensity, and momentum we showed this past weekend into tomorrow’s match,” Garibaldi said.

With the second half of district play underway, every match gives Brownfield another chance to show its improvement and finish the season on a positive note.

Garibaldi emphasized that preparation, confidence, and determination will be key as her team looks to turn competitive performances into better results.

“We understand the challenge ahead of us, but we are focused on competing, trusting our preparation, and giving ourselves an opportunity to finish strong.”

For the Lady Cubs, Wednesday’s matchup is another chance to show how far they have come since the start of the season. While the district schedule has presented challenges, the team’s continued improvement and competitive spirit remain encouraging signs for Garibaldi and her program.

The Lady Cubs will look to build on that progress Wednesday as they take on Lamesa in another important district contest.

Wellman-Union Lady Cats Bounce Back Against Wilson, Look to Build Momentum in District Play

The Wellman-Union Lady Cats volleyball team faced adversity and found success last week as district competition continued. After a tough loss to Klondike on Tuesday, the Lady Cats responded with an impressive three-set win over Wilson on Saturday, giving head coach Mandy Carter and her squad much-needed momentum heading into the second half of district play.

Tuesday’s matchup against Klondike presented a difficult challenge for Wellman-Union. Although the Lady Cats fell short, Carter pointed to several encouraging performances that showed her team’s determination and competitive spirit.

Defensively, Jerzee Harlan and Peyton Huston helped lead the way with outstanding efforts throughout the match. Their ability to keep plays alive and battle for points was one of the team’s bright spots.

At the net, Ansley Brown and Katie Friesen also made significant contributions, coming through with clutch blocks that helped Wellman-Union compete against a challenging Klondike squad.

While the final result was disappointing, Carter believes the experience provided valuable lessons that will help her team improve as district competition moves forward.

The Lady Cats are placing a renewed emphasis on identifying weaknesses, making adjustments, and developing the consistency needed to compete at a high level.

Rather than letting Tuesday’s setback carry over, Wellman-Union returned to the court Saturday determined to get back in the win column.

That determination paid off as the Lady Cats swept Wilson in three straight sets, putting together a strong performance and showing they can respond to adversity.

The victory boosted Wellman-Union’s confidence and ended the week on a positive note.

Saturday’s win also highlighted the team’s resilience, something Carter hopes will remain a strength as the Lady Cats enter the second round of district competition.

Lady Cats Prepare for Southland and Loop

The Lady Cats face another busy week of district volleyball action, with two important matchups on the schedule.

Wellman-Union will take on Southland on Tuesday, October 13, before returning to action Saturday, October 17, against Loop.

Both matches offer the Lady Cats chances to build on their recent success while continuing to improve in areas Carter and her coaching staff have identified.

Heading into these contests, the focus will be on maintaining strong defense, improving execution, and competing with confidence from the opening serve to the final point.

With the second half of district play underway, every match gives Wellman-Union a chance to strengthen its position and keep developing as a team.

The Lady Cats have already shown they can respond to difficult situations, and Carter believes the lessons learned against Klondike, combined with Saturday’s victory over Wilson, will help prepare her team for the challenges ahead.

With renewed focus and a better understanding of what it takes to succeed, Wellman-Union looks to carry its momentum forward.

The Lady Cats will look to continue their winning ways this week as they face Southland on Tuesday and Loop on Saturday, hoping to build on their improvement and finish the second half of district play strong.
