On today’s date, Paul Vasquez was sworn into the District 1 city council member position. The council passed a proclamation that would name June 15, 2024–June 22, 2024, as “clean-up days” in Brownfield, Texas. As the city manager mentioned, “This is just something to get the community out and clean up a little bit.” This feels like an initiative to get the community involved and take pride in the city of Brownfield. The city employee of the quarter was named today, and Rick (last name not mentioned) is a code enforcer for the city and has served this community for 14 months.

The monthly financial report passed, and the monthly investment was “well ahead of the money secured.” When it comes to the fireworks show, the show is supposed to be based on donations. The city has had to put money into the show in the past couple of years. Which forces council members to discuss what will happen with the show. Will they continue the show, do something different, or come up with an alternative solution to secure the funds? After discussion of this topic, the council members would pass the monthly investment report.

The director of electric utilities gave the quarterly update and reports to council members. Members passed and accepted the report from the electric utilities’ director. After the electric director, the director of water and waste gave their quarterly reports and updates. When Cromwell shut down its water production, the city of Brownfield “was able to hold its own,”  the water director said. He would add that they have replaced valves and reinstalled blowers at the wastewater plant, along with other improvements in the city.

Mayor Eric Horton would be assigned to the ambulance board, while the three appointed members for the zoning board would be passed by the council. Appoint the five members of the Planning and Zoning Commission board, and three members of the Building Code Board of Adjustment, and appeals would also be passed. Five members would be appointed to the electrical examiners, and six members would be appointed to the plumbing, gas, and mechanical boards. Jimmy Garza would be nominated to represent the council on the cemetery board. They would move on to appoint and pass two members to the park board.

The city council would then move on to consider a Type 2 event application that was submitted by the Brownfield fireworks celebration committee. The cost of this year’s show is $17,500 and could require an upfront payment for the pyrotechnician. Council members would deliberate on the best way to try and find methods to gain funds for the event. Eventually, the conversation would steer toward how the money could be planned and budgeted. After this discussion, the council members would pass the special event application. This would be the final topic, and the meeting would be adjourned.
