1. Breast Cancer Awareness Month Oct. 1 – 31, 2023

Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is held in October every year, aims to promote screening and prevention of the disease, which affects one in eight women in the United States every year and 2.3 million women worldwide. Known best for its pink theme color, the month features a number of campaigns and programs — conducted by groups ranging from breast cancer advocacy organizations to local community organizations to major retailers — aimed at:
- supporting people diagnosed with breast cancer, including metastatic breast cancer
- educating people about breast cancer risk factors
- stressing the importance of regular screening, starting at age 40 or an age that’s appropriate for your personal breast cancer risk
- fundraising for breast cancer research
2. National Fire Prevention Month Oct. 1 – 31, 2023

October is National Fire Prevention Month and that means it’s time for us all to take the precautionary steps to prevent dangerous and life-threatening fires.
According to the National Fire Prevention Association, the colder and winter months see an increase in home fires, deaths, and injuries. These are the months when we turn on the heat to keep our homes warm. While we need to keep our homes warm, there are steps we should take to prevent a fire.
3. 76th Annual Terry County Harvest Festival Oct. 5 – 6, 2023

We begin on Thursday night at 7:00 pm at the Brownfield High School Gym for the annual pageant and talent show which showcases each Queen Candidate, who are Jala Bazan with United Fund of Terry County, Joslyn Garza with Arnold Community Educational Services (ACES), Skiler Lopez with Lash Me Now, Emalee Martinez with Miss Brownfield Org., Bridget Murph with Alph Omega Study Club, and Zoye Wise wit Lion Club. The Miss Congeniality Award will be given to one of the young ladies that evening.
On Friday evening at Coleman Park, there will be the Music & Motors Event which will feature a car cruise at 6:00 p.m., then a free concert with a local band Day Late, Dollar Short from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. and then beginning at 8:00 p.m. the featured Friday night band Chase The Night Band will perform.
On Saturday the Harvest Festival will begin with its annual Harvest Festival Parade at 10:00 a.m., then everyone will move down to Coleman Park for the other festivities which include cheer groups, introduction of this year’s Queen Candidates, local talent, car show & car show awards, music by All About Alice, Shelton Rohling, & Day Late, Dollar Short, plus the grand prize and the coronation of the 2023-2024 Harvest Festival Queen!

4. Columbus Day Oct. 9, 2023
Columbus Day is a national holiday in many countries of the Americas and elsewhere, and a federal holiday in the United States, which officially celebrates the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas. Columbus went ashore at Guanahaní, an island in the Bahamas, on October 12, 1492.
5. Halloween Oct. 31, 2023

Every October 31st, people all over the United States celebrate Halloween. Children and adults dress in costumes and attend parties, visit haunted houses, and eat Halloween candy. Most kids spend the night “trick-or-treating,” going door-to-door to collect sweets from their neighbors.
