Cubs football poised to win district

by Eric

If there ever was a time in Brownfield Cub’s 100 years of football history to go farther than they ever have before, this might be just that season. In February 2022, the University Interscholastic League (UIL) gave Brownfield and their other district foes a gift by moving regional perennial powerhouse Shallowater to the northern district, opening up an opportunity for Brownfield and possibly Denver City to win a district title. This would set them up for a good run in the playoffs.

After a tough pre-district schedule, key injuries, and a few major adjustments, the Cubs began to impress the fans. Although the Cubs ended their season 3-8 in 2021, don’t let that fool you. In district action, the Cubs only fell twice and that was to Shallowater 40-0 in the district opener, and to Denver City 37-23. Brownfield was able to capture the 3rd place spot in district and would lose a heartbreaker to Muleshoe 21-17 in the Bi-District round. There just was not enough time.

However, the Cubs look to bounce back and capture a District Title this season. Brownfield returns 7 starters on offense and 8 starters on defense. During the offseason, the Cubs have worked tirelessly to get bigger, faster, and stronger. The 7-on-7 squad did really well during the summer months beating Shallowater, 4A Andrews, 4A Dumas, and defending 4A DI State Champions Stephenville plus other decent 7-on-7 squads.

Cubs Head Coach Aarrhon Flores is very excited about this season. Flores is now going into his fourth season at BISD, the past two at the helm as head coach and he believes the culture and mindset of his players have evolved into an optimistic football machine. With the experience he has coming back this season and how the players have bought into the game plan, why wouldn’t a coach be excited? The Cubs lost only 10 seniors to graduation, however, Brownfield brings back 15 starters and 23 lettermen that have seen varsity experience.

Flores has expectations with WR Kaydyn Moore (6-0, 190, 4.6), LB Austin Sisson (5-9, 185, 4.6), and LB Kaden Wise (5-11, 180, 4.7). WR Moore had 653 yards and 4 TDs last season, and with his size and speed, he will be exceptionally dangerous. LB Sisson had 94 tackles, and he did not play every game due to an injury, so his heart, mind, and attitude are ready for Friday nights. Wise, like Sisson, is about the same. He is steady and true and will help keep the opponents’ skill players out of the end zone.

The Cubs have a lot of speed on the offense, and with that comes a high octane, NASCAR, and fast tempo operation that will drain the defenses the Cubs will see. Watch and see the Cubs come into each game prepared and ready for action. Their first game of the season is at Post. Brownfield will east and come back west with a win. Next, they host Tulia. The Hornets have been decent of late, but with a home game, the Cubs will come away with a win. Moving on into week 3, the Cubs will take last season’s Class 3A Region I DII Champions the Roosevelt Eagles. Although Roosevelt lost a lot to graduation, they will be looking to continue this newfound success. This will be a battle, but the Cubs will come out on top.

The Cubs return home on Sept. 16 to take on Dimmitt. This is the homecoming game, and Brownfield does not want to disappoint the home crowd, so they’ll come away with another win. The next game begins three games on the road, and the stop is against Littlefield. The Wildcats have seen their fair share of decent seasons and a lot of playoff games. However, in the past few years, Littlefield has been overshadowed by teams like Shallowater, Bushland, Denver City, River Road, Muleshoe, etc. Littlefield, or better yet, the location of Littlefield seems to have a chokehold on Brownfield sports and with that factor, the Cubs will fight, but Littlefield will get the best of them. Next, the Cubs will travel back up to US Highway 84 to take on Muleshoe. Brownfield has been waiting for this game to avenge their loss from last seasons bi-district matchup with the Mules. Coach Flores believes this will be a tough game, however, the Cubs can come out on top.

Moving into district action, the Cubs will travel over to Denver City where the District 1-3A DI title will most likely take place. Brownfield has the means necessary to win over DC, however, the Mustangs are very disciplined and trained. That will not be enough to keep up with the Cub’s speed. Brownfield will come home that night sitting 1-0 in district and ready for the other three teams. Finally, after a three-game traveling stretch, the Cubs host Lamesa. The Tors frankly don’t have what it takes to keep up with Brownfield, even though Coach Hood knows Brownfield very well.

After that game, the 2-0 in district Cubs travel the furthest of the season to Kermit. Again, same story, different team as the Cubs will win big over the Hornets. When week 10 rolls around, the Cubs will get some much-needed rest before they take on Slaton in week 11. Brownfield and Slaton have become this newfound rival in sports, especially boys’ sports. Slaton had some major turnover in the school district, including the coaching staff. The Cubs will exploit this issue and win district outright in front of a home crowd and on senior night.

District 1-3A DI predictions:

  1. Brownfield
  2. Denver City
  3. Lamesa
  4. Slaton
  5. Kermit
