December 5, 1927 – February 9, 2022
Truman Allen DuBose was born on December 5, 1927 in Knox City, Texas to Willard Morgan and Nannie Belle (Sparks) DuBose. He passed peacefully from this life at 5:00 AM at his home on February 9, 2022.
Mr. DuBose moved to Terry County at a young age. Truman had six sisters and two brothers. The DuBose family attended the Methodist Church in the Johnson Community. The building was shared by the Methodist and the Church of Christ congregations on alternating Sundays. He made his profession of faith at age 13 at a Church of Christ revival. But, was baptized in the Methodist Church the following week.
Truman attended Johnson Community and Brownfield Public Schools. He was in the Merchant Marines during World War II. Truman loved his country fiercely and continued to send petitions and letters to his Senators and Representatives every month.
Truman married the love of his life, Gwendolyn Merle (Franks) DuBose on December 15, 1949 at Northside Baptist Church in Brownfield. They were married by her father, Rev. A. J. Franks.
Mr. DuBose’s only son, Wayne Allen, was born on May 11, 1951. His only grandson, Kenton Wayne, was born on October 16, 1985. He loved them both with all his heart.
Truman is remembered by most as a Terry County farmer. He loved preparing his land and then planting the seeds, daily tending to the crop as it grew, but his most favorite part was the harvest. He love being on the cotton stripper or the combine. He was always completely involved with his crop. He said, “I just couldn’t be a windshield farmer!”
Gwen and Truman moved to Ruidoso, NM in the fall of 1976. He built houses, decks, did remodeling, and installed new doors and windows, or anything else that was needed. Many of these jobs were for his friends from Brownfield. After 12 years, they returned to Brownfield to assist in the care of Gwen’s parents.
Gwen went home to Heaven on January 20, 2015. Truman wished to join her daily, and his “love for life” was never quite the same.
Mr. DuBose is survived by his son Wayne DuBose of Lubbock, his grandson Kenton DuBose and wife Alishia of Ft. Worth, his “adopted” son Scott Millsap of Lubbock, one sister Pat Wilson of Lubbock, one sister-in-law Cecilia Franks of Brownfield, one brother-in-law John Franks of Brownfield, 11 nieces, 6 nephews, and a multitude of friends.
The family respectfully suggests that any donations be made to the First Baptist Church Brownfield Building Fund. Floral arrangements are welcome and will be placed on Gwen’s grave after the Celebration Reception.
