Texas Tech basketball picked up its first commitment of the 2021 class with Jaylon Tyson‘s announcement via Twitter on Tuesday night.
“I want to start off by thanking God. I would not be in this position without him!! I also would like to.thank my amazing parents and stepfather for being there for me and for pushing me to be who I am today, as well as my brothers Jordyn and Berron Tyson for their constant support. Finally, I would like to thank the coaches and trainers who have constantly pushed and guided me. Coach Trai Givens for taking me under his wing and pushing me and giving me the opportunity to show what I’m capable of. Secondly, a sincere thanks to Coach Dan Lee for coming to JPII and giving me an opportunity to play my game and believing in my talents. Also, the coaches who have recruited me, Coach Beard and Coach Mal for being there from the jump and believing in my talents. The 6-foot-6 small forward from Plano (TX) John Paul II has visited the Red Raiders several times including for Texas Tech’s home games against Kentucky and Kansas last season.
“Oh for sure they (Texas Tech) exceeded my expectations,” Tyson told Inside the Red Raiders after the Kentucky game. “Tech is live.”
Tyson is a four-star recruit rated as the No. 75 overall player in the country, the No. 16 small forward in the nation and the No. 5 overall player in Texas for the 2021 class according to 247Sports.
Tyson chose the Red Raiders over reported offers from Crighton, Houston, Oklahoma, Oral Roberts, Richmond, SMU, TCU, Texas A&M and Xavier.
Texas Tech assistant coach Ulric Maligi leads Tyson’s recruitment. Tyson added they communicate almost on a daily basis.
