Brownfield looks to flip the script against defending powerhouse Bulldogs Friday night.
The Brownfield Lady Cubs are heating up at exactly the right time.
Coming off a dominant 21-8 victory over Stanton on Monday night, Brownfield has now won five straight games, improving to 9-1 in district play and 14-4 overall. With their offense firing on all cylinders and confidence building each game, the Lady Cubs now find themselves on the doorstep of something even bigger.
On Friday night, #15 Brownfield will host #11 Coahoma in what could decide the top spot in the district standings. With a win, the Lady Cubs would take over sole possession of first place. But standing in their way is a familiar and formidable opponent.

Coahoma enters the matchup at 8-1 in district and 18-2 overall, with their only district loss coming in a narrow 11-10 game against Denver City. The Lady Bulldogs, a three-time state champion program, have had the upper hand in this matchup since the teams were placed in the same district last season.
Brownfield is 0-3 against Coahoma during that span. Last season, the Lady Bulldogs dominated both meetings, winning 10-0 and 18-0. Earlier this season, Coahoma once again came out on top with a 19-11 win in the first round of district play. But this Brownfield team is different—and they’re playing like it.
Both squads come into Friday night’s showdown with serious momentum. Coahoma picked up an impressive 12-2 win over Lamesa earlier this week, continuing a trend of offensive dominance. And when it comes to scoring runs, these two teams are among the most dangerous in the district. In district play, Brownfield is averaging 16 runs per game, while Coahoma is right there with them at 18 runs per game. Simply put, this could turn into a high-scoring battle between two red-hot lineups.
Still, Brownfield head coach Zoey Garcia knows that games like this aren’t just won at the plate—they’re won with discipline and execution across the board.
“It’s definitely going to be a game where we’re going to have to play fundamentally sound softball,” Garcia said. “They’re a well-coached team with hitters throughout their lineup. I have confidence in our pitchers and the defense to back them up. We’re treating it as any other game with the same goals in mind; we have to be competitive in all four aspects of the game.”

For Brownfield, there’s also a little extra motivation heading into Friday night.
The 19-11 loss to Coahoma back in March still lingers, but the Lady Cubs now have a chance to respond—with momentum, confidence, and a home-field advantage behind them. If recent performances are any indication, Brownfield is playing some of its best softball of the season at just the right moment.
Now, the question becomes: can the Lady Cubs finally break through against Coahoma and take control of the district race? We’ll find out Friday night.
First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m. in Brownfield.
