Texas Tech picked up a late addition to its 2020 recruiting class Sunday afternoon with the commitment of College of San Mateo tight end Jason Lloyd, who announced his decision via Twitter.

“I am extremely grateful to be in the position I am today and I am blessed to have the opportunities that are in front of me today. I would like to thank my family for everything they have done for me my whole life and believing in me and my dreams every step of the way. I also would like to thank my coaches who taught me to play the game at a dominant level. Coach Tulloch and the CSM staff took me in and treated me like family. Coach Messina and his Covenant staff believed in me and let me know that my dreams could be a reality. I thank everyone who has had a piece in my process coming to this moment. With that being said… I would like to announce THAT I WILL BE PLAYING THIS FALL AT TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY WRECK EM #COMMITTED”

Though he was originally listed as a Class of 2021 recruit, he is a full qualifier and Texas Tech coach Matt Wells offered him a scholarship for next season.ADVERTISING

“Coach Matt Wells spoke with myself and my family over FaceTime and after a long and great conversation, he offered me a scholarship to play football at Texas Tech,” Lloyd told Inside the Red Raiders on Thursday shortly after announcing the offer. “I was at a loss of words and was and am just extremely grateful for the opportunity. He said the second I stand on campus I’m on full scholarship and the respect he had for myself and my family as well as his program really stood out to me.”

After spending a year at Air Force Academy Prep School in 2018, the California native played his freshman season at San Mateo where he caught 13 passes for 200 yards and a touchdown. Lloyd has three seasons of eligibility remaining.

In addition to playing tight end, special teams coordinator Mark Tommerdahl wants to utilize Lloyd as a deep snapper.

“Yes sir (Tech is interested in me as a deep snapper) and I plan to practice more on my snapping as the weeks go on,” Lloyd said.

Lloyd chose Texas Tech over reported offers from Toledo, UCF and UNLV.
