As we enter week four of the Texas high school football season, the landscape in Terry County reveals an intriguing picture. One team stands out with an impressive undefeated record, showcasing their dominance on the field. In contrast, another team is still searching for their first victory, facing struggles that have left it winless so far this season. Additionally, there’s a third team that, despite their current 1-2 record, is just a handful of plays away from being undefeated, indicating the competitiveness and tight margins in their games. The intensity of this week’s matchups promises to be exciting as each team vies for improvement and success.
Brownfield Cubs (0-3) vs Levelland Lobos (1-2) at Levelland; Friday, Sept. 19th, 7:00 pm kickoff
The Brownfield Cubs faced another tough loss during their home opener on Friday night, falling to Roosevelt with a score of 47-32. Although a loss, a standout performance came from senior quarterback Braylon “B-Money” Bruno, who threw for an impressive 431 yards, completing 23 of 34 attempts. According to the school records, this is now the passing record for a single game for the Cubs football program. The Cubs demonstrated their ability to score points despite the defeat.

This Friday night, the Cubs will travel north to take on the 4A DII Levelland Lobos in the “Battle of 385”. Head Football Coach Lawrence Johnson is optimistic that the offense will maintain the explosive execution they showed against Roosevelt. Levelland enters this game with a record of 1-2, having lost to two tough opponents: Dalhart (55-15) and Idalou (32-13). Their only win came in week two against Pecos, where they secured a 41-21 victory. The Lobos have accumulated a total of 408 rushing yards, averaging 136 yards per game, along with 577 passing yards, which amounts to an average of 192 yards per game. Overall, they average 328 yards of total offense each game.
To improve their chances of scoring more points, the Cubs need to minimize turnovers and penalties. Defensively, the line must penetrate Levelland’s offensive line to effectively stop the run game. Additionally, the secondary needs to enhance their tackling skills and work on creating turnovers. Lastly, the special teams must execute without mistakes to ensure a smoother game. Coach Johnson stated, “We are hungry to win and will play with a chip on our shoulder, knowing we let one slip away last week.”

Meadow Broncos (3-0) vs Spur Bulldogs (0-3) at Spur; Friday, Sept. 19th, 7:30 pm kickoff
Despite a challenging start during their game against Loop last Friday, the Broncos demonstrated remarkable resilience by overcoming an early 14-0 deficit to secure a resounding victory of 50-32, improving their season record to an impressive 3-0. Coach Blake Jackson praised his team’s determination, highlighting how Meadow showcased their grit and tenacity by refusing to give up in the face of adversity. A pivotal moment occurred just before halftime when the Broncos executed a crucial goal line stop followed by an electrifying 76-yard touchdown drive, which shifted the momentum in their favor. “We wore them down with big stops and big plays to clinch the win,” Coach Jackson stated confidently.

Junior Brayson Parker emerged as a standout player in the clash, amassing a remarkable 204 yards on the ground, scoring four rushing touchdowns, and also showcasing his versatility by passing for 84 yards and adding two more touchdowns through the air. His exceptional performance was instrumental in turning the tide of the game.
The Broncos head east Friday night to take on Spur. The Bulldogs finds itself in a difficult position with a record of 0-3 this season, falling short of the expectations set for the team. Their defeats have come from tough matchups against cross-county rival Wellman-Union (26-22), Ira (61-14), and Aspermont (66-16). The last time the Broncos faced Meadow at home, they triumphed decisively, winning 60-12 nine years ago.
However, while the Bulldogs may be struggling with their record, they possess a formidable and agile running back who poses a significant threat to the Broncos’ defense. As Coach Jackson pointed out, this player plays a crucial role for the Bulldogs on both offense and defense. “We will have to play smart, stay penalty-free, and come out hotter than we did last week, aiming for a quick start,” said Coach Jackson, emphasizing the need for heightened focus and determination in their upcoming matchup.

Wellman-Union Wildcats (1-2) vs Grandfalls-Royalty Cowboys (2-1) at Grandfalls; Friday, Sept. 19th, 7:30 pm kickoff

Last Friday, the Wildcats faced off against the #10 Paducah Dragons, ultimately losing the game 82-63. However, they put up a strong fight. Wellman-Union had a solid game plan, and the players were well-prepared, knowing what needed to be done to secure a win. Unfortunately, TownTalk Athlete of the Week (Week 1) Gabe Quintanilla was injured in the second quarter, which forced a change in strategy. It was time for senior #5 Eli DePoster to step up, and he certainly did. He rushed for 184 yards and scored five rushing touchdowns, while also passing for 161 yards and one touchdown, in addition to making nine tackles on defense. Coach LaBadie praised Eli, stating, “That’s the type of leader we have this year. I’m super proud of him for battling through the entire game and never once coming off the field. He’s a great kid and a hard worker.”
Coach LaBadie went on to say, “The boys continued to fight, and I’m very proud of them for competing against a top 10 team and keeping the game within 19 points. Despite the loss, I’m happy the boys could see how good a football team they can be when they all work together and play hard.”
After three straight home games, the Wildcats will finally hit the road for a two-hour trip south to Grandfalls, where they will take on the Grandfalls-Royalty Cowboys. The Cowboys have had a decent season so far, with one loss to #2 Water Valley (54-0) but victories over Midland TLC (55-7) and a close win against preseason #10 Buena Vista (38-36). Wellman-Union enters this game as the underdog once again, but that’s nothing new for them. After last week’s performance, Coach LaBadie mentioned that the boys are excited to go out and secure a win. “The culture is changing; they’re working hard every day, and they want to win and make a statement every week,” said Coach LaBadie.
