Independence Day is right around the corner and many people will be out in the county setting off fireworks. Fireworks are not allowed to be set off in the city limits of Brownfield, however, they are allowed to be set off out in the county. A few things to remember, you cannot use private property to set off fireworks unless you have permission from the property owner. Next, it is illegal for a person(s) to leave their firework trash on the side of the road when they’re done anywhere in the county. That includes US Highways, State Highways, Farm to Market (FM) roads, and county roads.
For the past several years, county employees of each precinct spends several hours working to pick up firework trash that has been left behind illegally. Again this year, the days leading up to and on the day of Fourth of July, the Terry County Sheriff’s Dept. will be out in full swing monitoring roads, and those setting off fireworks.
Terry County Sheriff Tim Click said, “Most importantly be safe. Keep in mind private property and must have permission to be on it. You need to be mindful of animals, people driving down county roads have the right of way, not the person popping fireworks. Let the fireworks cook off a few minutes before you load them back up to throw them away. Do not leave trash on county roads.”
