Terry County High School Basketball Roundup Week 14

by Eric

As the high school basketball regular and district season comes to an end, four of the six squads already punched their tickets to the postseason. For the other two, we’ll find out more by week’s end.

Brownfield Lady Cubs (6-5, 9-21)

Last week, the Lady Cubs took care of business against Lamesa, winning 57-39. However, they lost to #23 Coahoma with a score of 52-38, which dropped them to fourth place in the district standings. The victory against Lamesa secured the Lady Cubs a spot in the playoffs, but if Denver City wins against Coahoma on Tuesday night, the Lady Cubs will go into the playoffs as the second seed in Division I. Additionally, Brownfield will still become the second seed if the Lady Cubs lose to Crane and the Fillies lose to Coahoma. Conversely, if the Lady Cubs defeat Crane and the Fillies lose to Coahoma, they will tie for third place. According to Coach Carver, it is likely that they would have to play a seeding game in that scenario.

In their last matchup against Crane, the Lady Cubs won 44-31. Crane has three wins in the district, having defeated Compass twice and Lamesa once. Since their last game against the Lady Cubs, Crane has been averaging 32 points per game while allowing 44 points. Meanwhile, the Lady Cubs have averaged 45 points per game since their victory over Crane and have also allowed 44 points per game.

On Tuesday night, the Lady Cubs will embark on a two-hour and ten-minute drive to the south to play their final regular season game against Crane. The Lady Cubs have shown significant growth throughout the season and are looking strong. They might have secured a win if they had a bit more time during their game against Coahoma last Friday night. Crane is likely aware of this and will do everything they can to disrupt the Lady Cubs’ chances of securing the top seed heading into the Division I playoffs.

#5 Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs (10-0, 22-7)

Last Tuesday, the Runnin’ Cubs achieved a significant victory over Lamesa, winning 81-48. This win also marked Coach McPherson’s 100th career victory. The Runnin’ Cubs then returned home on Friday night to secure the District 3-3A title with an impressive 86-58 win over Coahoma. This game was particularly special as it was the last home game for Coach McPherson’s five seniors, whom he started to honor. With this victory, the Runnin’ Cubs extended their winning streak to 13 games. During this stretch, the team has averaged 84 points per game while outscoring their opponents by an average of 31 points.

The Runnin’ Cubs have two more district games left, both of which will be away. They will follow the Lady Cubs to Crane, where they won their last encounter 87-38. Over the past ten seasons, Crane has reached the playoffs in nine of those years, excluding last season. Although Crane has had a tough season, they would certainly love to upset the #5 team in the state. Brownfield will finish district play in Stanton on Friday. In their last matchup against Stanton, the Runnin’ Cubs won decisively, 107-35. We’ll leave it at that.

Meadow Lady Broncos (5-4, 17-10)

The Lady Broncos split games last week, winning over Cotton Center 49-23 and losing to #12 Whitharral 46-27. Now the focus is on their last district game of the season when they faceoff with Amherst at Amherst. The previous matchup, the Lady Broncos won 60-13. The Meadow girls have already clinched a playoff spot and will represent District 5-1A as the top seed for Division I. According to the schedule, they will play Grady next Monday.

Wellman-Union Lady Cats (4-5, 14-13)

The Lady Cats split games last week, losing to Anotn by five, 33-28, and winning over Amherst 66-22. On Tuesday they’ll finish up the district when they travel up to Cotton Center. In their previous game, the lady Cats won 53-14. Like their cross-county rivals, the Lady Cats have punched their tickets to playoffs will take on #14 Borden County either next Monday or Tuesday night.

Meadow Broncos (4-3, 12-15)

The Meadow Broncos had a mixed week of games. They secured a win against Cotton Center, finishing with a score of 56-24, which extended their winning streak to three games and brought them closer to playoff contention. However, they suffered a significant loss against #14 Whitharral, with a final score of 102-30. This week is crucial for the Broncos as they prepare to travel to Amherst, followed by a matchup against their cross-county rival, Wellman-Union. In their previous game against Amherst, Meadow lost narrowly, 40-38. A victory against Amherst would guarantee their spot in the playoffs. If they do not win, they will have one more chance on Friday when they face Wellman-Union, a team the Broncos defeated 51-27 in their last encounter. If the Broncos win both their games against Amherst and Wellman-Union, they will secure a place in the playoffs representing District 5-1A as the number one seed in Division I. However, losing both games could allow the Wildcats to claim a playoff spot.

Wellman-Union Wildcats (1-6, 8-15)

The Wildcats have a chance to make the playoffs; however, they need to win all of their remaining games to secure that opportunity. They will automatically win tomorrow’s game due to Cotton Center forfeiting. This means they need to win their last two games on the court against Meadow and #14 Whitharral. If they lose to Meadow, their playoff chances will be over. If they win against Meadow but lose to Whitharral, they will also be eliminated. However, if they win both games against Meadow and Whitharral, they will be tied for the fourth-place spot with either Amherst or Meadow.

Top 25 Rankings for week of Feb. 3rd, 2025

Teams in RED are from REGION I

GIRLS TOP-25

NOTES: It appears that Monterey has fallen from the top position in 5A, but there’s still hope. The toughest girls’ district in 5A features Monterey, Tascosa, and Amarillo High, highlighting the strength of girls’ high school basketball in West Texas. All three teams will advance to the playoffs, with Monterey entering the Division II bracket, while Tascosa and Amarillo High will compete in the Division I bracket. In Class 3A, there is a new number-one team after Canadian held the spot for eight consecutive weeks. Their recent loss to Bushland led to this change. Not only did Bushland defeat Canadian, but they also overtook the former #13 team, Dalhart, which has now dropped to #23. Jim Ned has now claimed the top position and will compete in Division I. Keep an eye on Whiteface; they’ll be entering Division II for the playoffs and could have a strong chance of winning it all.

BOYS TOP-25

NOTES: The Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs stay at #5. The District 3-3A Champs have two games left in district and will jump into the playoff in the Division I bracket. Shallowater is making steps after being ousted from the #5 spot on January 13th and moving to #25. Now they are sitting at #15 and have two wins over the next largest school in the district, Littlefield. Shallowater will go into the playoffs in the Division I bracket. District 4-2A is still up for grabs. Abernathy, Floydada, and New Home are all going to the playoffs. Abernathy will head to the Division I bracket and be followed by most likely New Deal. Floydada and New Home will go DII.
