Brownfield Lady Cubs (5-4, 8-20)
The Lady Cubs hosted Odessa Compass on Friday night and delivered a well-executed performance, winning the game 61-22 and taking a step closer to a playoff spot. The Lady Cubs started strong, outscoring Compass 15-3 in the first quarter. Allyson Guzman led the quarter with five points, making two two-pointers and converting one of two free throws. Lucy Guzman also made an impact, scoring twice, while Mariah Perez contributed with a three-pointer and one of two from the free-throw line. The second quarter mirrored the first, with Brownfield outscoring Compass 13-5. Lucy Guzman again led the team, scoring five points, including another three-pointer and a regular field goal. Maya Martinez also hit a three and made one of two free throws. Both Brynlee Morin and Kayleigh Saldana added two points each and each went one for two at the line, finishing the first half with a commanding 20-point lead, 28-8.

The third quarter was a strong period for the Lady Cubs, as they outscored Compass 21-7. Perez led the team during this quarter with six points, making three baskets. Martinez contributed with four points, while Saldana and Ly’Tiona Fisher each scored a basket and went one for two at the free-throw line. Allyson Guzman added two points, Morin made both of her free throws, and Lucy Guzman was one for two from the line.In the fourth quarter, the Lady Cubs slowed down slightly but still outscored Compass 12-7. Yesenia Mara was the standout player in this quarter, scoring five points with a traditional three-point play after making a basket and being fouled. She also added another field goal. Lucy Guzman hit another three-pointer, and Aniah Baker contributed with a basket. Both Morin and X’zarria Sanders went one for two at the free-throw line.
Lucy Guzman led the team with 13 points followed by Mariah Perez with 12.
This week, the Lady Cubs aim to continue their winning streak as they travel to Lamesa and host #23 Coahoma at home. In their last encounter with Lamesa, the Lady Cubs narrowly won 33-32 at home. Currently, Lamesa is three games out of fourth place and has a record of 2-3 since losing to Brownfield. They have been averaging 39 points per game since their first match against the Lady Cubs while allowing 41 points. Brownfield has been averaging around 43 points and allowing 44 since their match-up. If the Lady Cubs win against Lamesa, they will secure a spot in the postseason.

On Friday night, the #23 Coahoma Bulldogettes will visit for senior night. In their previous matchup, Coahoma won decisively with a score of 61-39. However, the Lady Cubs exhibited strong gameplay for most of that game, despite a rough second quarter that featured an 11-0 run, a 5-0 run, and another 7-0 run, contributing to the 23-point difference at halftime. Coach Carver believes this upcoming game is winnable.
Coahoma has already clinched a playoff berth. If Brownfield wins both games this week and next week against Crane, they will enter the playoffs as the number one seed in Division I. The Lady Cubs have been playing well over the past two games and are filled with momentum. They need to focus on overcoming Lamesa and executing their game plan against Coahoma, which could lead to an upset—after all, that’s why we play the game.

Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs (8-0, 20-7)
The Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs secured their 11th consecutive victory on Friday night against Odessa Compass, winning 83-37 and clinching a playoff spot. The Runnin’ Cubs showcased their strength following a hard-fought double overtime win over Denver City the previous Tuesday.
In the first quarter, Brownfield outscored Compass 23-12, with Jeron Lawrence leading the charge by scoring 14 points. Trae Timmins contributed four points, Joseph Bayless sank a three-pointer, and Kenyon Cantrell added two points to finish the quarter.

Moving into the second quarter, the Runnin’ Cubs continued to dominate, limiting the Cougars to just nine points while scoring 16 themselves. Timmins again led the scoring with eight points, followed by Lawrence with four points, which included a three-pointer and a free throw. Cantrell and Joe Mara each chipped in with two points.
In the third quarter, the Runnin’ Cubs really took control, outscoring the Cougars 27-9. Lawrence scored 10 points, thanks to a three-pointer, three field goals, and one free throw. Bayless added nine points with three three-pointers. Quavience Busby finally got on the scoreboard with two baskets, one of which was a dunk. Both Kam Gibson and Zyre Guzman contributed two points each.
In the fourth quarter, Brownfield eased off slightly but still outscored Compass 17-7, with Guzman leading the scoring for the quarter with five points. Lawrence added four points, while Busby, Cantrell, Tayzon Stell, and Jonah Franco each contributed two points.
Like the Lady Cubs, the Runnin’ Cubs will head to Lamesa on Tuesday night and then take on Coahoma at home on Friday night. Lamesa is currently in fourth place. Since 2009, Lamesa and Brownfield have been in the same district together 13 times, and the Runnin’ Cubs hold a 14-11 record against the Golden Tors. Although Brownfield won the first matchup of the district 65-37, Tuesday night’s game could resemble last week’s game against Denver City. The two towns are about 35 miles apart and between them is farmland, farmhouses, and not a lot love, which contributes to a competitive atmosphere. The Golden Tors are looking to upset the Runnin’ Cubs.

On Friday night, Coahoma will come to town, and in the first round of district play, Brownfield won that game 76-53. That was the closest game in the first round of the district. The Bulldogs are currently tied with Denver City for second place. However, this will be the Runnin’ Cubs’ last home game of the season and also Senior Night. They will want to give seniors Joe Matta, Q Busby, Tazjon Stell, and Zyre Guzman a great send-off!

Meadow Lady Broncos (4-3, 16-9)
The Lady Broncos narrowly lost to Anton on Friday night, with a final score of 45-42. This defeat brought their district record to 4-3, placing them in third position. Next, the Lady Broncos will travel to Cotton Center to face the Lady Elks for the second time in the district. In their previous matchup, the Lady Broncos won decisively, 52-17, and Cotton Center has since recorded a 1-3 record. A win over Cotton Center would secure the Lady Broncos a spot in the playoffs and position them as the first seed for Division I.
Friday night will mark their final home game, where they will go up against #12 Whitharral. In their last visit to Whitharral, the Lady Broncos lost 61-24. To have a chance at upsetting the Lady Panthers, the Lady Broncos will need to play tough and minimize turnovers.

Wellman-Union Lady Cats (3-4, 13-12)
The Lady Cats experienced back-to-back losses last week, falling to Meadow 49-40 and suffering a tough 59-16 defeat against #12 Whitharral. They will travel to take on Anton on Tuesday night, a game that could potentially create another three-way tie for second place. Previously, the Lady Cats won a close match against Anton at home on January 10th, scoring 55-53. This victory had initially created a three-way tie for second place, with the Lady Cats losing to Meadow, the Lady Broncos losing to Anton, and the Lady Bulldogs losing to Wellman-Union.
Tuesday’s game will be challenging for the Lady Cats. If they win, they will improve to 4-4 in the district and come one step closer to securing a playoff berth. Later in the week, Amherst will visit Wellman. In their last encounter, the Lady Cats defeated Amherst significantly, winning 64-20. Fans can expect a similar performance this time around.

Meadow Broncos (3-2, 11-14)
After an impressive week, the Meadow Broncos are on cloud nine, defeating their cross-county rival Wellman-Union 51-27 and overcoming a tough Anton team 55-41. With these victories, Meadow, Amherst, and Anton are now tied for second place in the district.
Next up, Meadow will begin the second round of district play by traveling to Cotton Center on Tuesday to face the Elks. This matchup marks the first time the two teams will meet this season, as Cotton Center forfeited their earlier game. Currently, the Elks are sitting in last place in the district. A win for the Broncos would bring them one step closer to clinching a playoff spot.
Later in the week, the Broncos will host #14 Whitharral. In their last encounter, the Panthers triumphed with a score of 75-16. However, the Broncos have improved as the season progresses and may present a tougher challenge.

Wellman-Union (1-4, 8-14)
Unfortunately, the Wildcats had a tough week last week, losing to their cross-county rival, Meadow, with a score of 51-27, and to #14 Whitharral, 79-25. Similar to the Lady Cats, the Wildcats will travel to Anton to face the Bulldogs, against whom they lost in the first round of district play, 64-51. The Wildcats are currently on the outside looking in for a playoff berth and will need to play tough to secure a win against Anton. Their game on Friday will be at home against Amherst, a team they have also previously lost to. Once again, playoff implications are on the line.
