Preview, recap, standings, and rankings.
We are heading into week three of Texas high school football and it looks like it going get interesting. The three Terry County football team went 1-2 this past Friday night, with Meadow winning 51-6 over West Texas Tornadoes, the Wellman-Union Wildcats with a tough loss to Kress, 54-32, and the Brownfield Cubs fell to #21 Slaton 62-7.
Brownfield Cubs (0-2) vs Roosevelt Eagles (0-2) at Brownfield, 7:00 pm kickoff (Thur. Game)
The Cubs certainly want to move on from last Friday night’s game. This week is a short one for the Cubs as they will host the Roosevelt Eagles on Thursday night at 7:00 PM. This will be the third consecutive District 2-3A DII team that Brownfield faces. The Eagles are also 0-2, having lost to Denver City 31-14 and New Deal 35-14. According to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, Roosevelt is favored to win by seven points. However, it’s Senior Night in Brownfield, and the team is hungry for a win in front of their home crowd.
Reflecting on the Slaton game, Coach Lawrence Johnson emphasizes the need for execution on both sides of the ball to either stop drives or sustain them. The Cubs are focused on eliminating turnovers and self-inflicted penalties. Coach Johnson stated, “Our kids are playing hard, but we have to match the intensity of our opponent. The loss is on me! We must do a better job of simplifying our plays so our kids aren’t overthinking and can play fast with confidence.”

As for Roosevelt, Coach Johnson noted, “They have a run-heavy offense but also maintain a balanced attack, while their defense has allowed points. We need to create stops to generate momentum. We’re averaging at least one turnover per game on defense. Our goal this week is simple: Execute the calls, eliminate penalties, and have fun! It’s our Senior Night, and first responders will get in free.”
In their first two games of the season, the Eagles have gained the majority of their offensive yards on the ground, totaling 342 yards and averaging 3.8 yards per carry. Their passing game has been less effective, with only 79 passing yards from 28 attempts and 12 completions. On defense, Roosevelt averages two sacks per game and has recovered four fumbles, along with one interception.
Despite the lopsided outcome of the Slaton game, the Cubs managed to gain 133 more offensive yards with a total of 172, compared to their game against Muleshoe, with only 39. The Cubs’ total offensive yards for the two games played is 211.
Defensively, Ayden Molina and Braydon Luther have been standout players over the past two weeks, combining for 26 tackles—13 each.
Current District 2-3A DI Standings

Meadow Broncos (2-0) vs Loop Longhorns (0-2) at Loop, 7:30 pm kickoff
The Meadow Broncos are currently enjoying a strong start to the season, boasting a 2-0 record and outscoring their opponents 109-14. In last week’s game, the Broncos’ offense performed exceptionally well, showcasing a balanced attack with 141 yards passing and 143 yards rushing. The only possession where Meadow didn’t score was an exception to an otherwise dominant performance. On defense, the team forced three turnovers and recorded multiple tackles for loss.
In this upcoming week, the Broncos will need to focus on stopping the Longhorns’ running game, which supports their play-action attack. To succeed, Meadow must protect the football, execute successful passes, and block effectively in the running game.

Wellman-Union Wildcats (1-1) vs #10 Paducah Dragons (2-0) at Wellman, 7:30 pm kickoff (Thur. Game)
The Wildcats continued to fight in last week’s loss to Kress, which ended with a score of 54-32. The team was well-prepared and understood what they needed to do to win, but due to some mental mistakes and several costly turnovers, they were unable to overcome the challenge posed by the Kangaroos. Coach LaBadie expressed his pride in the team’s effort, saying, “Despite the loss, I’m extremely proud of the way the boys fought back and never quit. We’ll learn from it and only get better.”
This week, the Wildcats will face #10 Paducah, who is 2-0 to start the season. Their victories include a dominant 62-14 win over Guthrie and a 73-24 win against Springlake Earth. The Dragons are known for their scoring ability, so the Wildcats will need to keep the ball out of their hands as much as possible. Paducah is a 33-point favorite in this matchup, making it a significant test for the Wildcats as they compete against a strong team. LaBadie noted, “They’re a good team with two very good players. We know we’re the underdog going into the game, which is fine with us. We were in a similar situation in week one against Spur. If the boys come out and set the tone early, we are capable of making a statement and leaving with an upset win.”
