Spring Showers at StoryTime Yoakum Co. Library

by admin

On Wednesday, April 5, 2017, the Yoakum County Library in Plains hosted a water education program tailored for young children.

Michelle Cooper, the Education & Outreach Coordinator for the Southern Ogallala Conservation & Outreach Program, presented another informative and multi-sensory event. This year’s showers focused on the rainforests.

After completing opening activities of calendar discussion and pledge recitation, Mrs. Cooper was introduced, and she incorporated the youngsters’ sense of hearing as she shared some rainforest sounds. She then read a beautifully illustrated book, “The Water Hole” by Graeme Base. This book incorporated a vast array of science, geography, and number recognition.

The children in attendance were Case, Reiner, Ariyel, Moriah, Bryson, and John—all enjoying the book and discussion.

Two other books referenced were “The Rainstick: A Fable” and “The Great Kapok Tree” before Mrs. Cooper gave the children a hands-on craft. Using toothpicks, toilet paper rolls, beans, and duct tape, each child and caregiver had a fun time making their own rain stick. The children finished up the rain time by participating in making sounds of rain with only hands. Finally, along with plenty of paper helps, the children also got an “Aqua Cop” sticker and some gummie snacks as they exited the program.

StoryTime is open to children of all ages, from birth on up. This weekly program will enhance language skills through a variety of senses and engage children in a lifetime of literacy.

Come join the StoryTime at the Yoakum County Library in Plains on Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. Next week’s program time (Wed., April 12) will be the annual Easter egg hunt. Please bring a dozen filled and sealed eggs, and a snack to share if possible, to participate in free event.
