Meadow sweeps Wellman-Union in cross-county rivalry

The Meadow Broncos and Lady Broncos faced off against the Wellman-Union Wildcats and Lady Cats in a cross-county rivalry.

Meadow Lady Broncos vs Wellman-Union Lady Cats

The evening began with the Lady Broncos facing off against the Lady Cats, both teams entering the game with a 3-2 district record. In the first round of the district, Anton, Meadow, and Wellman-Union all lost to #12 Whitharral. However, Meadow won against Wellman-Union, Wellman-Union defeated Anton, and Anton triumphed over Meadow.

The game started with strong defenses, resulting in the first points being scored only three minutes in. #32 Joey Harrington led the Lady Broncos in scoring for the first quarter with 4 points, supported by two points each from #1 Alejandra Gonzalez, #14 Abigail Gonzalez, and #25 Khloe Rodriguez. In addition to her scoring, Harrington played a crucial role in defense, helping to limit the Lady Cats to just 6 points. The points for the Lady Cats came from #5 Aliyah DePoyster, who made a three-pointer, #24 Alyssa Cavazos with a layup, and #4 Emalyn Navarro, who went one for two at the charity stripe. The first quarter ended with the Lady Broncos leading 10 to 6.

The second quarter continued to showcase strong defensive efforts from both teams. Alejandra Gonzalez returned to the court and helped maintain offensive momentum by hitting a three-pointer. Harrington continued to demonstrate her defensive skills, supported by Rodriguez. However, Lady Cat Aliyah DePoyster made things interesting by knocking down another three-pointer. The Lady Broncos maintained their lead with two points each from Harrington and Abigail Gonzalez, plus #5 Keandra Yannis, who went one for two at the line. Lady Cat Cavazos added to their score with a layup and went one for two at the line. Meadow outscored Wellman-Union 8-6, ending the second quarter ahead 18-12.

In the third quarter, the Lady Broncos began to take control of the game, with Abigail Gonzalez leading her team in scoring, contributing eight points—six of which came from two three-pointers and a jump shot. Alejandra Gonzalez added three points with a shot from beyond the arc. As in the first half, the Lady Broncos’ defense remained intense. Harrington dominated in steals and greatly increased the opposition’s turnover rate while also scoring a bucket. #10 Jillian Cavazos added a layup to the score as well. Meadow’s tough play allowed the Lady Cats to go to the line four times; #14 Aaralyn Herrera went three for four, Alyssa Cavazos went one for two, and #22 Jessica Lira went zero for two but managed to make a three-pointer. DePoyster added two more points for the Lady Cats. Meadow outscored Wellman-Union 15-9, now leading 33-21 at the end of the third quarter.

The final quarter proved challenging for the Lady Broncos as the Lady Cats attempted to mount a comeback. The Lady Cats scored nine points in the fourth quarter, including a significant three-pointer from DePoyster, along with another bucket. Although Wellman-Union was scoring, Meadow’s defense remained strong, with Harrington and Abigail Gonzalez keeping the team focused throughout the quarter. Abigail Gonzalez had the only field goal of the quarter, adding two to their score, while Harrington went four for five at the charity stripe. For the Lady Cats, #20 Jerzee Harlan and #15 Azayla Mercado both contributed buckets. Although the Lady Cats outscored Meadow 9-6 in the final quarter, the nail-biting game concluded with the Lady Broncos securing a 39-30 victory.

Abigail Gonzales led the Meadow Lady Broncos in scoring with 14, followed up by Joey Harrington with 12 points. For the Wellman-Union Lady Cats, Aliyah DePoyster was top point scorer with 13 followed by Alyssa Cavazos with six.

Meadow Broncos vs Wellman-Union Wildcats

The excitement continued in the boys’ game as it was their first matchup of the season. In the first quarter, both teams showcased solid defenses. The quarter ended with a narrow score of 14-9 in favor of the Wildcats. Wildcat Eli DePoyster contributed with a three-pointer and added two points from a jump shot, getting fouled and completing a three-point play the hard way. Meadow, on the other hand, had #20 Isaac Estrada leading the scoring, making two field goals and going two for two at the free-throw line. Estrada’s field goals were the only baskets for Meadow in the first quarter. Broncos #5 Esteban Estrada, #10 Kyle Woodard, and #21 Pancho Arita each went one for two at the line. However, Wildcat #23 Keagan Dominguez helped Wellman-Union outscore Meadow with two layups and going two for four at the line, while #0 Edgar Macias added a basket of his own.

The second quarter began quickly, but the Wildcats’ defense faltered. The Broncos held the Wildcats scoreless during this quarter. Pancho Arita led Meadow with six points from three field goals, while #20 Isaac Estrada added another basket and went two for two at the free-throw line. Woodard also contributed with a bucket and going one for four at the line. The Broncos outscored the Wildcats 13-0 in this quarter, leading to a halftime score of 22-14.

In the second half, the Broncos maintained their momentum, outscoring the Wildcats 21-4 at the start. Wildcat Dominguez secured a layup but struggled at the free-throw line, going 0 for four. Macias added two points for Wellman-Union, but it was Meadow’s offense that continued to shine. Key players included #22 Korbin Young, who scored nine points with a three-pointer and two layups, going two for two at the free-throw line. Esteban Estrada added six points, while Triston Clanton scored four points for the first time that evening, and Isaac Estrada contributed two points. At the end of the third quarter, Meadow held a commanding lead at 43-18.

As the game wrapped up, the Broncos forced four Wildcat players to foul out: Edgar Macias, Eli DePoyster, Levis DePoyster, and Clayton Cochran, who managed to score two points before fouling out. Wildcat #3 Angel Ramirez knocked down a three-pointer, while Dominguez and #24 AJ Mercado each added two points for Wellman-Union. Although the Wildcats outscored Meadow 9-8 in the fourth quarter, the Broncos had built a significant lead during the second and third quarters, securing a victory with a final score of 51-27.

Pancho Arita and Isaac Estrada led the Broncos in scoring with 12 a piece followed by Korbin Young with 11. The Wildcats were led by Keagan Dominguez with 10.
