Both the Brownfield Lady Cubs and the Runnin’ Cubs added a victory to their records in last night’s games against Denver City, and both were closely contested matches.

Brownfield Lady Cubs

Starting with the girls’ team, they faced Denver City previously at Brownfield and suffered a loss, 63-39. Coming into this second district game, the Lady Cubs were sitting in fourth place. This time, they sought to avenge their earlier defeat, and they succeeded, securing an important district win against the Fillies.

In the first quarter, Denver City took until 5:35 to score their first points. However, Lucy Guzman made an impressive play, scoring a layup with 24 seconds left in the quarter and adding a free throw. Despite this, Denver City outscored Brownfield 6-3 in the quarter.

The Lady Cubs showcased their defensive skills in the second quarter and continued to battle hard. Guzman added a three-pointer, and Yesenia Mata contributed with a layup. Kayleigh Saldaña made a steal and converted it into a bucket, followed by Maya Martinez’s layup. Allyson Guzman and Reagyn Watkins each made one of their two free throws, leaving the score at 20-15 by the end of the quarter.

Moving into the third quarter, the Lady Cubs’ defense effectively stalled the Fillies, and they outscored Denver City 14-5, ending the quarter with a score of 29-25. Lucy Guzman and Martinez each made a three-pointer, while Allyson Guzman scored two baskets. Mariah Perez also added a bucket and went two for two at the charity stripe.

In the fourth quarter, Lucy Guzman drained two more three-pointers and converted two out of six free throws. Ly’Tiona Fisher also scored, as did Martinez, who went one for two at the free throw line. Allyson Guzman helped seal the victory by making five out of six free throws, as the Lady Cubs outscored Denver City 18-14, finishing the game with a score of 47-39.

Maya Martinez might have set a team record by taking eight charges, with seven of them being called. Coach Carver said this about Martinez, “Maya took seven called charges in the game. She’s the kid that is always willing to sacrifice for the team.” Lucy Guzman was the leading scorer with 17 points, followed by Allyson Guzman with 10 points and Maya Martinez with nine points.

Coach Carver said, “We had solid defense from the entire team. We told them that they add value to anything they are around. It was time to show the value they had. We are allowing God to be the leader of our team and have been steadfast in that. I also commend our bench energy and the amazing coaching staff we have. It took all 20 of us to win the game. I am truly proud of the growth we’ve made. We are hungry for success and never back down from a challenge.”

#5 Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs

For the #5 Runnin’ Cubs, Tuesday night’s game was quite different from their previous encounter at Brownfield, where they defeated DC by 39 points (86-47). However, the Mustangs were determined to change the outcome this time, leading for most of the game and pushing the Runnin’ Cubs’ winning streak to the brink, ultimately resulting in double overtime.

The Mustang’s defense was impressive, managing to hold Jeron Lawrence to just 23 points. In the first quarter, the Runnin’ Cubs came out strong, outscoring DC 12-11. Lawrence contributed nine points, including two three-pointers, while Braylon Bruno (B-Money) added another three.

As the second quarter unfolded, the Mustang’s defense intensified, leading to several turnovers. Joe Mata found the basket with a crucial three-pointer, while Kam Gibson, Kanyon Cantrell, Q. Busby, and Lawrence each scored a bucket. The first half ended with the Runnin’ Cubs trailing 26-23.

In the third quarter, the Runnin’ Cubs struggled against the Mustang’s defense again, allowing 11 points from Brownfield. Lawrence hit another three, accompanied by a three-pointer from Joseph Bayless. Gibson and Busby both made layups, and Lawrence went one for two at the free-throw line, ending the quarter down by ten points after being outscored 18-11.

The Mustangs maintained their lead at the start of the fourth quarter, keeping the Runnin’ Cubs at bay. However, midway through the quarter, the Runnin’ Cubs began a comeback. The Mustangs were called for fouls, putting Lawrence at the line, where he converted three of four attempts. Trae Timmins also scored his first points of the fourth quarter. Both Lawrence and Timmins managed to score a bucket. But it was Bayless who came through in the clutch, hitting four three-pointers. The Runnin’ Cubs outscored Brownfield 22-12 in the quarter, tying the game at 56.

In the first overtime, the Mustangs scored first with a quick layup, but the Runnin’ Cubs quickly responded to tie the score. Timmins kept Brownfield competitive by draining two three-pointers. The Mustangs went to the free-throw line and converted six out of six attempts. With about eight seconds left in the first overtime and Brownfield down by two, Lawrence brought the ball in. Busby attempted a quick jump shot, but it hit the rim; Lawrence was there for the putback, tying the game again at 68, with both teams scoring 12 points in the overtime.

In the second overtime, the Mustangs hit a bucket and were again sent to the line, where they made four out of six free throws. Timmins scored twice, helping the Runnin’ Cubs build momentum. Busby made one of two free throws, but Brownfield still trailed by one point. Lawrence then broke through for two points, giving the Runnin’ Cubs a 75-74 lead. After DC turned the ball over, Lawrence broke away and was fouled, sending him to the line with four seconds left on the clock. Lawrence made both free throws, extending the lead to three points. The Mustangs retained possession but could not score in the remaining seconds.

Jeron Lawrence led the Runnin’ Cubs in scoring with 23 points, followed by Joseph Bayless and Trae Timmins, who each contributed 15 points.
