Making a Difference

We have really been having some great rains lately. Some good heavy rains, and some nice slow soaking rains. Rain is my favorite weather. I love a cloudy day. I know that for many people, the types of weather that I love can bring on depression and gloomy days. It is interesting to me that how what can be enjoyable to one person, is a nightmare to another. Isn’t it wonderful that God created each of us so uniquely!

We all have differences. For example, I have always really liked spicy food. The hotter the better. Mike could not stand spicy food. He would eat Mexican food with beads of sweat on his nose, while I would be happily adding more salsa! I hear people say that they do not care for sweets. I wish that was me! Instead, I have quite the sweet tooth, followed by the salty tooth, followed by yet another sweet tooth, and on and on it goes. But we are all very uniquely made.

God created us this way. He made each of us so different from the one next to us. David recognized this, as he wrote in Psalm 139, “I praise You for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful and I know that full well.” David did know this full well. David’s life was a life of uniqueness. He was made with an affinity towards loyalty and responsibility. This served him well as the shepherd of sheep, and served others well when he was on the run from a king bent on killing him. David loved the king and remained loyal, in spite of Saul’s efforts to put an end to David. David also loved music. This trait served him well when he was asked as a young boy to play music to soothe the king that would one day want David’s life taken.

David also writes in Psalm 139 about how God knows our days and has them mapped out before Him and us. David knew our uniqueness and knew that it was certainly God given.

It is amazing to think about how God created each of us differently and each with so many unique qualities and tastes. But even more amazing to me is that anyone could think that all this just happened without the benefit of a Creator! I did not “just happen!” God made us differently in order that we would each have different roles to play in His Kingdom.

The world offers many images that are designed to make us want to look like that, or dress like that, or be athletic like that. We would be so much better served if we could learn to look in the mirror and pray as David did, “I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” God made you who you are. He made you for a reason. Be glad in who you are and let God use you to make a difference in this world!
