Making a Difference

We had a little bit of a storm last night. Not much where I live in the way of precipitation, which we so desperately need, but quite the light show and lots of thunder. The other thing is that our power went out. For like several hours! It is amazing how we have learned to depend on having the luxury of electricity. I know that for many years, way back yonder, the rural folks had to do without electricity, even though the “city folk” had it. It was a big deal when electricity was brought to the rural areas!

As I navigated my way around last night, lighting candles and such, I thought about how dependent we are on electricity and the technology in our world today. My phone was about half charged. I knew my watch was going to need charged soon. Oh what a dilemma! Sad, isn’t it!  I eventually went on to bed, and sometime during the night, suddenly my bedroom light came on! Blindingly! It was a tough night!

But, it all made me think about that one power source which never goes out. The one that never needs charging. The one that is always available to me, no matter what else might be swirling around me. As I lay there in my bed, I was talking to God about the various needs in my world. The loved ones around me that need healing or help. The world that seems to be ever on my mind these days. It was comforting to know that even though my world was dark and there was no power in my house, the power of God remained steadfast and ready for me to use. There is so much comfort in that knowledge.

In Psalm 139, David writes, “Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from Your presence? If I ascend to heaven, You are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, You are there! If I take the wings of the morningand dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there Your hand shall lead me,and Your right hand shall hold me. If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,” even the darkness is not dark to You; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with You.”

Clearly, David is saying that God was with him all the time, and the same is true with us! It absolutely does not matter what you have done, or what has been done to you, or what is happening around you, God is always with you! What comfort is in that promise! And what comfort is there in knowing that God will never break His promise to us!

So, even if your world seems dark and without power, turn to the One who is all powerful. The Bible says He will lean down to listen to His children. What a beautiful image that is! Trust in the One to whom the “night is as bright as the day.” Trust in the Savior! It will make a difference.
