2024 Season preview for the Brownfield Lady Cubs Volleyball
The Brownfield Lady Cubs Volleyball program looks to be back on track with a familiar face at the helm. After two seasons away from BHS, one coaching volleyball at Lubbock Estacado and last season not coaching volleyball, Malorie Brantley is back. Brantley is excited to be back at her Alma-mater and looks forward to the challenge to not only get back to the playoffs, but win a district title.
Brantley said, “They got 5th in district last season and our goal this year is to be district champs. This won’t be easy, but why strive for just a playoff spot when we can work to be the champions?”

In the past decade, the Lady Cubs have gone to the playoffs each season except in 2016 when they were bumped up to 4A, and last season, when they placed 5th. The program won back-to-back district titles in 2020 & 2021, plus reaching the Region I-3A Semifinals, only to fall to Holiday both years. When talking about a challenge ahead of them in district, they’ve been placed with a familiar foe of Denver City, which that program for 26 years has been a regional powerhouse. Also don’t forget about the other regional powerhouse of Bushland which has landed in the state tourney 12 times and won state seven, with state titles in 2A, 3A, & 4A.
Needless to say, the Lady Cubs have their work cut out for them. However, that should not deter them from being hardworking athletes. The Lady Cubs bring back five varsity starters and will have six seniors for some great leadership. “I am very pleased with the knowledge and experience we are starting the season with, and I am ecstatic to see where we can go. This team is very eager to learn more about the game of volleyball and they are big time competitors when it comes game time. We are working on translating that same competitive drive into our practices and not just in games.” Said Brantley.
Brownfield boasts a tough schedule this season with 11 pre-district games, and eight of those teams went to the postseason last year. The Lady Cubs will also head to two tourneys, one at Shallowater and the other at Denver City. There is a chance for the Lady Cubs to take on Shallowater, which was also a 2023 playoff team.
When Brownfield begins district play, it will still not be a cakewalk with four of the six teams punching their tickets to the playoffs last season. That includes Denver City’s Regional Semifinal run. The Lady Cubs open up district action at home against Crane on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 11:00 a.m. Next, they travel south to Coahoma on Tuesday, Oct.1. They will get back-to-back home games against Lamesa on Saturday, Oct. 5 and then Odessa Compass on Tuesday night Oct. 8. This will be the “pink out” game. The Lady Cubs will finish out the first round of district at Denver City, on Saturday, Oct. 12.

The second round of district, Brownfield will take that long trip south to Crane on Tuesday evening, Oct. 15. They come back home to take on Coahoma for the “Teachers Appreciation” game on Saturday morning, Oct. 19. Next they will have back-to-back road games, first in Lamesa, Tuesday evening, Oct. 22 and then travel over to Odessa to take on Compass Saturday morning, Oct. 26. The Lady Cubs will face off with Denver City in their last district game at home and it will be senior night.
Brantley went on to say, “I am thrilled to be coaching the lady cub volleyball team again and I have really high expectations for this team and I am challenging them to be district champs this year!”
