A new coach and a new season are upon the Wellman-Union Lady Cats Volleyball team. Mandy Carter, who was promoted from assistant coach last season, is taking over the role after Coach JaiDeanne Madrid left for Levelland after just one season. Coach Carter is eager to lead the team, stating, “As I step into the head coaching role for the Lady Cats this season, I am filled with excitement and gratitude. I have had the privilege of being with this program for the past three years, and I can confidently say this group of girls is something special.”

Another change this season is the addition of Wilson, who will field a team and compete alongside Wellman-Union, Grady, Klondike, and Loop. The Lady Cats have a decent history of reaching the playoffs; however, advancing past the first round has proven to be a struggle. Since the Lady Cats began playing volleyball in 2014, they have missed the playoffs three times and progressed to the second round twice, in 2017 and 2022. A significant challenge for Wellman-Union is Klondike, a regional powerhouse in Class 1A. The Lady Cougars consistently dominate the district, making it difficult for Wellman-Union to claim a district championship. Over the past decade, the Lady Cougars’ volleyball program has averaged four playoff games each year, indicating that District 2-1A is one of the toughest in the state.

The Lady Cats have been showing up every day with intensity and purpose, demonstrating skill, competitiveness, and a strong desire to win. According to Coach Carter, the energy in the gym is high, and the expectations are even higher. There is a solid core of returning players, along with significant growth from the seniors. Key players that Coach Carter is highlighting include Azayla Mercado, who she describes as “the definition of an all-around player and leader.” Coach Carter notes, “She has grown tremendously over the last three years, not just in her skill but also in her presence on and off the court. I can’t wait to watch her flourish in her senior season.”

Junior Jerzee Harlan is another crucial leader who will help set the tone for the team. Her consistency, work ethic, and ability to lead by example are vital to keeping the Lady Cats focused and engaged every day. Additionally, there is a promising group of rising underclassmen who have been pushing the pace in practice and are expected to be exciting to watch this year.
Coach Carter. went on to say, “What I love most about this team is that everyone contributes. We’ve built a culture where every role matters, and every player understands the importance of working together. We’re building something bigger than just one season, and this year is an important step in that. We are chasing success this year, and I have no doubt this group will achieve that.”
