The Tallest Missing Person… Er, Animal… in the Lone Star State
It may sound like the opening line of a joke, but it’s completely true.
A giraffe named Gracie has become one of the most talked-about runaways in Texas after escaping from her enclosure at Cedar Hollow Ranch in the Texas Hill Country. And despite helicopters, reward money, and countless tips, she’s still proving that having a head above everyone else doesn’t necessarily make you easier to find.

Gracie, a 3-year-old reticulated giraffe standing roughly as tall as a one-story building, escaped nearly two weeks ago after wandering into a rocky section of the ranch that the other giraffes had never explored. She eventually came down the wrong side of a gate—and just like that, she was off on what has become one of the most unusual searches in recent Texas history.
Her owner has searched thousands of acres by helicopter and is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to her safe return. Officials say the rugged, heavily wooded terrain of Real County has made locating the towering traveler much more difficult than anyone expected.
The Internet Has Entered the Chat
Of course, this is Texas—and the internet wasted absolutely no time.
Social media has “spotted” Gracie:
- Floating the Frio River.
- Riding a city bus.
- Working at Buc-ee’s.
- Directing traffic.
- Volunteering with local firefighters.
- And apparently auditioning for every AI meme generator on the planet.
Sadly—or perhaps hilariously—none of those sightings have been real. Authorities continue to ask the public to ignore the fake posts and report only legitimate sightings.
A Few Questions We Have…
Here at TownTalk Media, we have a few observations.
- How do you lose an animal that’s 15 feet tall?
- At what point does a giraffe become a local landmark?
- Somewhere in Texas, a mesquite tree is wondering why it’s suddenly missing all of its leaves.
- And if Gracie shows up in Brownfield… we promise we’ll let you know before she becomes the new water tower.
The Serious Side
While the story has produced plenty of laughs online, the search itself is very real.
Gracie is a privately owned animal, and everyone involved wants to see her safely returned. Wildlife experts say she has access to food in the Hill Country and is not considered dangerous to people, but the longer she’s away, the greater the concern for her welfare and safe recovery.
TownTalk’s Official Prediction
We’re not saying Gracie is headed west…
…but if someone suddenly reports seeing a giraffe standing next to a cotton field in Terry County looking confused by tumbleweeds, don’t say we didn’t warn you.
Until then, Gracie remains Texas’ tallest fugitive.
And somewhere out there, she’s probably wondering one thing:
If you have a legitimate sighting of Gracie, contact the appropriate local authorities or the ranch involved. In the meantime, enjoy the memes—but let’s all hope this Texas adventure has a safe ending.
