The biggest drawing card to this election might have been the legal sale of mixed beverages in local restaurants. A petition drawn up by Patrisha Manzano was circulated throughout Denver City and received enough legal signatures to be placed on the ballot. However in the end voters turned it down 135-120.
Two new City Council members will be sworn into office on Monday night, May 16, to serve a two-year term following the City Council election held on Saturday, May 7.
Clinton Bowman and Mark Sherman will be replacing incumbents Barbara Qualls and Dalphene Benson. Qualls chose to not run for another term and Benson finished in fourth place of the six candidates running for the three seats.
However, the third incumbent Keith Mensch was successful in holding on to his seat for another term.
The final unofficial tabulations showed Bowman with 131 early votes and 44 more on Election Day for a total of 175 votes; Mensch was next with 111 early votes and 35 on Election Day for a total of 146; and Sherman took the third spot with 78 early votes and 36 on Election Day for 114 votes.
They were followed by Benson with 73 early votes and 31 on Election Day for 104; Jim Hunnicutt had 78 early votes and 24 on Election Day for 102; and Manzano, a former Council member, was last with 23 early votes and 20 more on Election Day for a total of 43 votes.

There were 189 early voters and 78 more on Election Day for a total of 267 voters.
The City Council will meet in their regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, May 16, starting at 7 pm.
