Observance for the month of October:

  • National Breast Cancer Awareness Month – Early detection is crucial for successful treatment of breast cancer. That’s why every October, we unite to raise awareness about the disease and to urge people to get tested.   • National Chili Month – Every October, as the air starts to get chilly, we celebrate National Chili Month. It’s the perfect time to honor this ultimate cold-weather snack, especially with winter approaching. Chili is the ultimate comfort food.

Weekly Observances for October

  • National Walk Your Dog Week: October 1 to 7– If your dog enjoys getting outdoors and taking walks, this week is the perfect time to do so. You and your dog can participate in a nationwide celebration that emphasizes the benefits of walking together. It’s time to put on your shoes and get your dog’s paw pads ready for National Walk Your Dog Week. This week serves as a reminder to pet owners that exercise is crucial for the health of their canine companions.
  • Red Ribbon Week: October 23 to 31 – Red Ribbon Week highlights the importance of living a drug-free life. It presents an opportunity for parents, educators, and communities to reinforce the drug-free messages they share with their children throughout the year. During Red Ribbon Week, youth and adults around the nation pledge to increase their knowledge by learning more about the destructive effects of drug abuse, including prescription drug misuse, and renew their commitment to live a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.

Observances for different days in October

  • Oct. 1 – International Coffee Day: International Coffee Day, celebrated on 1 October, is an event dedicated to promoting and celebrating coffee as a beverage. Events take place worldwide to mark the occasion. The official date was first recognized on 3 October 2015, as agreed by the International Coffee Organization, and was launched in Milan.
  • Oct. 4 – National Cinnamon Roll Day: This day was first celebrated 19 years ago in Sweden and the love for this day is just as sweet. All over the country, people bake and enjoy various types of cinnamon rolls on this day.  Whether you buy ’em or bake ’em,  on National Cinnamon Roll Day, let the sweet times roll!
  • Oct. 13 – Breast Cancer Awareness Day: October 13 is nationally recognized in the U.S. as Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day. It is estimated that about 168,000 women in the U.S. have metastatic breast cancer, which is cancer that spreads beyond the breast to other parts of the body. Researchers estimate that about 30% of early-stage breast cancers eventually metastasize. This day, which began in 2009, aims to educate the public about the need for more funding for the study of metastatic breast cancer and the development of new treatments.
  • Oct. 14 – Columbus Day: Columbus Day is a national and federal holiday in the United States and other countries in the Americas. It officially celebrates the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas when he landed at Guanahaní, an island in the Bahamas, on October 12, 1492.

Local Celebrations and Observances in October

Terry County Harvest Festival – Oct. 3-5, 2024

This year, we celebrate the 77th Annual Terry County Harvest Festival. The Festival kicks off on Thursday evening and @ 7:00 pm on Oct. 3rd with the annual Pageant and Talent Show. Each queen candidate will perform a talent and wear an evening gown. Also, Ms. Congeniality will named. Next, on Friday, Oct. 4th, there will be Live Music, Car Cruise, & Show at Coleman Park. Then, on Saturday, Oct. 5th, the Harvest Festival Parade will begin at 10:00 am and will lead everyone into Coleman Park, where there will be lots of food, entertainment, prizes, and the crowning of the new queen!

Halloween Downtown & Around – Oct. 31, 2024

This year in Brownfield, the County, the City, the businesses, and the churches have come together for Halloween! So bring your kids to Trick or Treat on the Square, Broadway, Main Street, different businesses, and several Trunk or Treats at churches… all around TOWN in Brownfield! The event will begin at 3:00 p.m.
