Brownfield Lady Cub Volleyball
Brownfield not only secured a victory over Lamesa on Saturday but also achieved their largest win since August 12th, when they won 3-0. Everything went in their favor against Lamesa, as they finished with a 3-0 scoreline, placing them tied for third in the district with Coahoma, a team they lost to last Tuesday night. Brownfield managed to keep Lamesa from winning a set, although the third set came close. The final scores for the sets were 25-21, 25-18, and 25-22.
Next, the Lady Cubs will face a challenging team from Compass Academy (3-1, 20-8) tomorrow night, Tuesday, Oct. 7th, at 6:00 pm. Compass Academy currently holds second place in the standings. Brownfield has struggled against Compass Academy in the past, with a 0-6 all-time record against the Lady Cougars. However, this streak could change with several Lady Cubs performing exceptionally well recently. Senior Melody Salas (#10), a right-side hitter, has recorded 11 kills with four errors on 26 attempts, boasting a hitting percentage of .269. Sophomore Allyson Guzman (#6), the libero, has made 35 digs, seven assists, and has the highest serve-receive rating on the team at 1.83, with 30 perfect passes out of 46 attempts.
On Saturday, Oct. 11th, the Lady Cubs will begin the second round of district play at home against the #14 Denver City Fillies. In their last encounter, Denver City swept the Lady Cubs with scores of 25-7, 25-15, and 25-15. However, the situation can change in a few weeks. The Lady Cubs need to focus on overcoming Denver City’s tallest player on the court to prevent her from dominating the game.
