1814 — Francis Scott Key writes the words that became “The Star-Spangled Banner.” After witnessing the British bombardment of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812, Key saw the American flag still flying the next morning and wrote the poem that eventually became our national anthem.
1847 — U.S. forces capture Mexico City. General Winfield Scott’s troops entered the Mexican capital during the Mexican-American War.
1901 — President William McKinley dies. McKinley died eight days after being shot at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo. Vice President Theodore Roosevelt became president.

1963 — The 16th Street Baptist Church bombing occurs in Birmingham, Alabama. Four young girls were killed in the racist bombing, becoming a major turning point in the Civil Rights Movement.
1978 — Muhammad Ali defeats Leon Spinks. Ali regained the heavyweight boxing championship, becoming the first fighter to win the heavyweight title three times.

1908 — General Motors is founded. William C. Durant organized General Motors, which would eventually bring brands such as Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and others under one corporate umbrella.
1919 — Congress grants a federal charter to the American Legion.

1793 — George Washington lays the cornerstone of the U.S. Capitol. Washington participated in the Masonic ceremony marking the beginning of construction of the Capitol building.

1947 — The United States Air Force officially becomes an independent branch of the military. That anniversary is why September 18 is recognized as the Air Force Birthday.
1970 — Guitar legend Jimi Hendrix dies in London at age 27.

1995 — The Washington Post and New York Times publish the Unabomber manifesto. Its publication eventually helped lead to Ted Kaczynski’s identification and arrest.
