The Texas Rangers are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred early Monday morning in Big Spring.

According to preliminary information, the incident happened around 12:40 a.m. on Feb. 23 in the 500 block of Westover near the Westover Hills Apartments.

Authorities report that a Trooper with the Texas Department of Public Safety attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle for a traffic violation. The driver allegedly failed to stop, prompting the Trooper to initiate a pursuit. During the chase, the Trooper executed a PIT maneuver in an effort to bring the vehicle to a stop.

The vehicle reportedly left the roadway and drove into nearby bushes, after which two suspects exited and fled the scene on foot.

During the ensuing foot pursuit, investigators say one of the suspects fired multiple shots, striking the Trooper. The Trooper returned fire. One suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene. The second suspect remains at large and has not yet been apprehended.

The injured Trooper sustained a gunshot wound and was transported to a hospital in Lubbock, where they are currently listed in stable condition.

Officials confirmed that no residents at the Westover Hills Apartments were injured during the incident.

As is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings, the Texas Rangers have taken the lead in the investigation. They are being assisted by the Big Spring Police Department and the Howard County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities say the investigation remains active and ongoing, and no additional details are being released at this time.

Anyone with information regarding the identity or whereabouts of the second suspect is urged to contact the Big Spring Police Department at (432) 264-2550 or the Texas Department of Public Safety at (432) 498-2130.

More information will be released as it becomes available.
