UIL realignments are coming soon. Here are our predictions.

Well… it’s almost here. The University Interscholastic League’s (UIL) biennium realignments will take place on Monday, February 1, 2024. Coaches and Superintendents will converge on the regional Education Service Centers to get their packets and find out which district they are in. Since 2013, UIL has helped a bit by releasing the cutoff numbers for each class, as well as division cutoffs for football, however, UIL does not release the districts until February of every even year.

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) requires all schools to turn in enrollments on the last Friday of every October (“snapshot date”), through the Public Education Information Management System (PEIMS). UIL uses the snapshot date to get the enrollment figures and assign public and charter schools to competitive districts and class (conferences) sizes. Currently, UIL has six classifications from 1A to 6A, and 1A to 5A the sport of football is divided into two divisions in the districts. For 6A, when the playoffs begin, that is when the teams are divided into two divisions.

In Terry County, there are three school districts, Brownfield, Meadow, and Wellman-Union. Currently, Brownfield is 3A and 3A DI for football, both Meadow & Wellman-Union are 1A and 1A DI for football. In the 2022 realignment, Brownfield High School turned in an enrollment of 474. Meadow High turned in 86, and Wellman-Union High turned in 69. for the 2022 realignment, the enrollment cutoffs were:

  • 6A 2225 and above there are 249 schools; 249 (Basketball), 249 (Football); 247 (Volleyball)
  • 5A 1300 – 2224 there are 253 schools; 252 (Basketball); 251 (Football); 253 (Volleyball)
  • 4A 545 – 1299 there are 213 schools; 212 (Basketball); 192 (Football); 208 (Volleyball)
  • 3A 250 – 544 there are 233 schools; 231 (Basketball); 206 (Football); 221 (Volleyball)
  • 2A 105 – 249 there 219 schools; 216 (Basketball); 207 (Football); 156 (Volleyball)
  • 1A 104.9 and below there are 220 schools; 218 (Basketball); 148 (Football); 122 (Volleyball)

The football division enrollment cutoffs were:

  • 1A Division I 59.5 – 104.9 with 75 schools
  • 1A Division II 59.4 and below with 73 schools
  • 2A Division I 164.5 – 249 with 105 schools
  • 2A Division II 105 – 164.4 with 102 schools
  • 3A Division I 360 – 544 with 104 schools
  • 3A Division II 250 – 359 with 102 schools
  • 4A Division I 880 – 1299 with 99 schools
  • 4A Division II 545 – 879 with 93 schools
  • 5A Division I 1925 – 2224 with 132 schools
  • 5A Division II 1300 – 1924 with 119 schools

UIL released the cutoffs and division cutoffs back in early December 2023. Brownfield turned in 496, Meadow turned in 68, and Wellman-Union turned 65. According to the new cutoffs for the 2024 realignments, it keeps Brownfield in 3A, (DI football) and Meadow and Wellman-Union in 1A (DI football) Here are the new 2024 cutoffs:

There are some changes to Region I, notably, Brock will go to 4A, and Lubbock-Cooper Liberty will be in 4A and 4A DI, but Sweetwater will drop to 3A. Abernathy and Spearman will drop to 2A, with New Home going from DII to DI. Comanche moved from 3A DII to DI and Muleshoe and Slaton will move down from 3A DI to DII. Morton and Whiteface both move up to 2A, except Whiteface football will still play six-man.

Currently, Brownfield’s football district is District 1-3A DI, with Denver City, Kermit, Lamesa, and Slaton. It’s volleyball district is 3-3A with Coahoma, Denver City, Lamesa, Merkel, and Odessa Compass Academy. Their basketball district (this includes spring sports and academic competition ) is 3-3A with Denver City, Dimmitt, Friona, Lamesa, Littlefield, and Muleshoe. The softball district is Brownfield, Denver City, Lamesa, Littlefield, and Muleshoe. Baseball is the same as softball.

Meadow and Wellman-Union share the same football district, which includes O’Donnell and Whiteface. Wellman-Union volleyball district consists of Klondike and Loop. Meadow’s basketball district (also includes spring sports and academic competitions) includes Amherst, Anton, Cotton Center, Morton, Whiteface, and Whitharral. Wellman-Union basketball district (also includes spring sports and academic competitions) includes Dawson, Grady, Klondike, Loop, and Sands.

So here are my mock-ups and predictions of where UIL will place schools. From 2A to 6A, it is only Region I, and in 1A, its Region I & II. NOTE: All basketball districts are also volleyball, spring sports, and academic competition. Except for Wellman-Union Volleyball, they will still be in the same district as Klondike and Loop.
